Hospitality and Judgment in the Gospel of Matthew

In part one, Otherworld Journey: The Origins of Hell in Christian Thought,ⁱ we argued that from an early date the church had united underworld mythology with futurist eschatology. Additionally, since the eschatology of hell in a traditional framework presupposes futurism, its very foundation is false. Therefore, hell should be reassessed in light of preterism. Having considered the evidence for that conclusion in part one, part two offers an alternative interpretation of key judgment passages in Matthew that honors both the cultural and historical contexts.

Jared�s article was more a description of his journey and the place where he is now, which is a place where he has become not only disenchanted with Christianity but has become convinced that God may not even exist at all. And while Jared�s article was not meant to be scholarly or not even an attempt by him to convince anyone of his position, I wanted to answer some of his concerns and issues he brought up in the hope that I can touch his heart and perhaps simply let him know that he is not the first or the only one to struggle with the problems he mentioned.

Submitted by Jared Coleman on 2008-05-09 13:50:38 -- In one of The Four Horsemen videos linked to below (I think it�s hour 1) Christopher Hitchens makes an observation about religious people that I think is quite true, at least I know it was of me. He says that most people keep two sets of books, meaning that there is one set of beliefs which they use to order their everyday lives and another set which they get from religion and use only occasionally. The first set we use when we eat breakfast, brush our teeth, commute to work (or stay home with the kids!), pick up the dry cleaning, etc. The second we use during holy times or when life starts to suck. I would add that religious people who do not do this, but rather keep only one set of books, we often label fanatical or radical � and most of us don�t like fanatics.

Submitted by Virgil Vaduva on 2008-05-08 08:01:54 -- Since I became a Preterist I only spoke with Todd Dennis twice on the phone, so I don't really know the man very well at all; I also don't keep track of everything happening out there in the Preterist netherworld, of who hates who and who shanks who in order to get up to the top. I was therefore quite surprised when a few days ago someone sent me a note with a quote from Todd Dennis: "[I] wait until Planet Preterist was on its last leg & then come in & deliver the death blow." Does it sound like Todd Denis is the kind of guy that would kick someone when he is down? It does to me.

On June 14-15 a Bible Conference is to be held in Sparta, North Carolina that is to be built around the theme of understanding the marriage motif that is found in the Old Testament and finds its fulfillment in the New Testament, which indicates that God chose the Christian church to be the bride for His son and that the marriage took place following the completion of a betrothal period that ran from approximately AD 30 to 70. In addition to presentations that center around the marriage theme, there will be some discussion of how the Book of Daniel fits into the marriage framework as well as discussion of the biblical understanding of the role of money.

Eschatology is usually understood in theology to be the interpretation of things that happen at the end of time, and tends to occupy a separate section, somewhat detached from other theological concerns, at the end of systematic theologies. This divorce of �the end of time� from the rest of theological history is a striking feature of theology, for which I wish to propose an alternative not so far offered on this site.

Our family looks a lot like any family you'd like to have as your neighbors. We're quiet, decent people, and we mind our own business. We don't party, our kids are all well behaved, and even if you tried, you wouldn't catch either of us so much as holding our wife's hand outside. We're not wild sex swingers and we're not horny kids. Our sex lives are private - even from each other as much as we can. In the town where we live we look as dull and normal as much as possible. My libertarian stuff is all on-line, under a different name than the one my neighbors know. The only difference between our family and others is that we have an "Uncle Steve" that lives with us.
