Study Resources: An Evening with Shane Claiborne
Posted on Wednesday, February 13 @ 11:17:31 PST by Virgil

News A few days ago I went with a few friends to Apex Community Church here in the Dayton area to attend a meeting with Shane Claiborne. The place was packed; there were easily about 1,000 people there and the atmosphere was very open and exciting. They also offered communion in a way I have never experienced before: everyone went up to the front for the bread and the juice. Apex recorded the event and I highly recommend listening in...

Hey Virgil,

I listened in as you recommended. Is there a reason you recommended listening in? What anecdotal experiences did you expect that I would hear that I would not have been able to hear with much greater results from the governmental executive director in any government run poverty or homeless shelter? Or the principal and teachers of a public school in a ghetto area?

More important than what I did hear is what I didn't hear.

Tom

I didn't hear Mr. Claiborne address this theological question. "The Kingdom is at hand". A very pivotal point of doctrine and theological controversy. He introduced his address with a reference to it but then took a totally anecdotal tack and remained on a sidetrack. I'm afraid this is somewhat typical of modern Churchianity. Short on substance and long on emotive, charismatic pep talks. I don't mean to be unduly critical, but I tend to tune out anecdotal speeches, waiting to hear some reference to the Scriptures and insights pertinent thereto.

I have anecdotes of my own that would make the average Christian's hair stand on end. They're entertaining, exciting, etc. etc. But they don't really, fundamentally enable the listener to discover a fresh, new way of accessing a deeper understanding of the Truth. That's what people really need today.

By the way, Mother Theresa's wearing the worst shoes she could possibly find is evidence of the Catholic burden of false guilt - not true, godly love for others and godly wisdom. Her ability to help others was reduced by the deformity of her feet. Her Catholicism deformed her feet permanently. Let that be a lesson to us all.
