Was Jesus born on December 25th or early September?
Posted on Tuesday, December 11 @ 08:19:39 PST by Virgil

Debate kent submitted: "Question: I have heard a number of people say that Jesus Christ was not born on December 25, the date that Christians celebrate as his birthday. Is that true? If not, why do people celebrate on that date, and when was he born?

“Merry Christmas!” Centuries old, those cheery words are still being spoken each December by countless millions of people, some of whom do not even believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God or the resurrected Lord. As we write, the world is once again approaching “the Holiday Season,” when the name of Jesus Christ takes center stage for a few weeks. Amidst the often crass commercialism of Christmas, familiar carols and Christmas cards do herald the glad tidings of the babe born to be the Savior of mankind. And, in perhaps unwitting concurrence with our heavenly Father’s unparalleled act of giving His only begotten Son, even non-Christian families gather together in love and give gifts to one another. For many people, “Christmas” is their favorite time of year.

The Sept 3 BC date comes from Ernest Martin's book, The Star that Astonished the World, which can be read online here: http://www.askelm.com/star/index.asp
The book is very good and mostly convincing. Martin uses Rev 12:1 and astronomy to get a precise data and time for the birth of Christ. Even Martin admits that it may not be the actual birth date, but he is convinced that it is was John's intent to communicate it as such. --JDW

Sorry,

Herod died in March of 4 BC. That is reasonably documented. Two of his sons met with Augustus in Rome in August of 4 BC to discuss their future in politics. That is very well established.

ELM's date for the birth of Christ doesn't fit history.

This article reminds me of one that I posted last year titled “The Star of Bethlehem” found here on the Planet Preterist archives. http://planetpreterist.com/news-5165.html

We had a nice lively round of discussion about science and ancient star gazing and Virgil actually recreated for us a computer simulation showing the paths of the stars during some of the time frames in question. Of course the debate is primarily concerning when exactly should we look for the confluence of the stars to determine the best date for the time and year of his birth? It seems to revolve around determining the death of Herod and I can’t remember which one I put my stamp of approval on so maybe we need to debate the question again ;-)

Here are a couple of more pertinent links again.

Since the Scriptures do not emphasize an actual date of the Birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, I say let’s celebrate it on Dec. 25! It neutralizes a pagan holiday, the Saturnalia, and turns the focus of the New World Order to Jesus Christ (Santa is always a façade). “What counts is a new creation.” Gal. 6:15

No, He was't born in December. More like the fall. See the other folk's comments.

But I will contend that 9 monthes before the fall birth, Mary's conception was some time near or on the Winter Soltice [dec 25th]; at the time when the earth is at its darkestest moment; and then Light comes into the "Universe"...I mean "the world", ummm, excuse me...I mean "the land", err, uh, oh never mind!

Jesus was most probably born in late fall or early winter (Dec-Jan). This is easily demonstrated: His ministry spanned 3 1/2 years, ending in April AD 33. If we count backward 3 1/2 years, this would place Jesus' baptism in fall (Oct/Nov) of AD 29. (April is the 4th month, hence Jesus baptism would have been six months earlier than this, about Oct/Nov). Luke said he was baptized in the 15th year of Tiberius, which was AD 29. Luke also said he was not yet 30 at his baptism ("began to be about 30"). This would place his birth in 2 BC (there was no year "zero"). Jesus' birth day would therefore have followed his fall baptism. Jewish men started their public ministry in the 30th year. Since Jesus began to actively preach after his temptation in the wilderness, we can reasonably place his birthday at or near this time. This would place his birth in late December to early January. But in no event could it be in September.
