Prison Ministry Ruled Unconstitutional
Posted on Tuesday, December 11 @ 08:18:44 PST by Virgil

Politics plymouthrock submitted: "DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A federal appeals court says state funding for a Christian prison program in Iowa was unconstitutional, because it advanced or endorsed religion.

The court upheld a federal judge's ban on state funding for Prison Fellowship's InnerChange Freedom Initiative in Iowa, although the program continues with private funding.

The 24-hour a day, seven-day a week program immerses inmates in evangelical Christianity. Inmates who complete the 18-month program also get help after they're released from prison.

Prison Fellowship operates similar programs in Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas. All are now privately funded through donations from individuals and foundations.

The appeals court panel included former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who retired in 2005 but continues to take assignments on federal appeals panels."

Since the First Amendment applies to Congress, I would like to know under what authority the U.S. Constitution permits a federal judge to exercise authority in the field of religion over what I assume is a state prison. Perhaps some visitor to this site can explain that matter to me. I am not comforted by the knowledge that Sandra Day (affirmative active indefinitely) O'Connor continues to render her services.
