News: Southern California

As many of you may know, southern California is literally consumed by fires - which are annihilating everything in their path, as opposed to tormenting everything for eternity -- sorry I couldn't resist that one :) -- and our friend Mike Beidler and his family may be in danger. Today Mike called here and told me that they were going to be evacuated, but I was unable to get through with him since.
If you can pray for Mike and his family, and the other folks in the San Diego area, we would appreciate it, and Mike, if you are reading this please let us know if you guys are OK.
Note: Mike called and said they are fine. He has evacuated the rest of his family but he is at the house waiting things out.

by PreteristAD70 on Monday, October 22 @ 16:15:55 PDT (User Info | Send a Message) | Thanks for the prayers, Virgil! They are much needed in this region, which was devasated by a similar firestorm four years ago ... to the day!
We live in the Rancho Penasquitos community in northern San Diego. Fires are to the immediate north in Rancho Bernardo, and to the east in Poway. Not a good place to be, being beset on two of four sides by fire, which is being fueled by strong Santa Ana winds gusting up to 60 mph.
We're okay for the time being, but I must note that our community is (officially) part of a mandatory evacuation zone. I've already evac'd the wife and kids (along with prized possessions and important papers) to her brother's house, but because I am literally on the edge of the evac zone, I've returned home in order to have some peace of mind. I will leave when directly ordered to do so and/or I feel it's unsafe to remain.
Of course, that begs the question: am I violating Romans 13? ;-)
Seriously, I feel led to remain here. Not sure why, as I had no issues bugging out the first time around back in 2003 when we almost lost our house. A few hundred yards more, it would have been toast. Maybe it's because we were saved the first time around that I am lulled into a false sense of security. I dunno.
I think continually about what it would feel like to lose everything: my theology library, my Star Wars novels/comics, my CD and DVD collections, my clothes, my momentos that wouldn't fit in the vehicles. There's only so much you can take with you. When it all comes down to it, I don't think I would have a regret in the world. A brand new start could be a good thing ... and maybe even a God thing. That's how I felt four years ago and that's how I feel today.
God is sovereign, He is in control, and I will learn from this experience, allowing the Spirit to show me the good that comes out of the bad.
Best,
Mike

You guys are in our thoughts and prayers here in Western PA. I talked with JL earlier today and he told me the smoke was pretty bad in his area. The smoke damage alone can also be devastating.
You both know you have many friends here who love you guys and want to encourage you to stay strong in Christ who strengthens you in all things both seen and unseen no matter how thick the smoke may be at times!
Your brother in Christ,

Probably a good thing to let it go. Let the firefighters either sleep or protect people.
They said on the news this morning that this fire was set by an arson. The arson had specialized knowledge of how fire works in wind, terrain, and types of brush and lit 3 carefully planned spots. Disgusting.
