News: Tampa televangelist compares Romney to Satan

Florida evangelist Bill Keller says he was making a spiritual -- not political -- statement when he warned the 2.4 million subscribers to his Internet prayer ministry that ``if you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan!''
But the Washington-based advocacy group Americans United for Separation of Church and State says the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) should revoke the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status of Bill Keller Ministries, nonetheless.
Keller, 49, who has a call-in show on a Tampa television station and a Web site called Liveprayer.com, on May 11 sent out a ``daily devotional'' that called Romney ``an unabashed and proud member of the Mormon cult founded by a murdering polygamist pedophile named Joseph Smith nearly 200 years ago.
'' If the former Massachusetts governor wins the GOP nomination and the presidency, Keller's message added, it will ``ultimately lead millions of souls to the eternal flames of hell.''
In a letter to the IRS on Thursday, Americans United called Keller's message a violation of the ban on partisan politicking by tax-exempt religious groups.
Keller, in a telephone interview, laughed off the controversy. ``Let them come after me for making a spiritual statement about Mitt Romney. I would love that,'' he said. ``Bring it on.''

The IRS 501(c)(3) code is what it is. With privileges, as in all other things, come responsibilities.

Re: The State Has A Right To Rebuke All State-Incorporated, 501 (c) 3 "Churches" (Score: 1)

As much as I'm opposed to every hostile State, and it's federal auxiliary, I am going to side against Keller on this one.
State-incorporated, 501 (c) 3 "churches" or "ministries" have sold their souls to the State, figuritively speaking, and have promised to keep their mouths shut about telling their members who to vote for or not to vote for.
Americans United is correct that "Keller's message is a violation of the ban on partisan politicking by tax-exempt religious groups."
Keller has not keep his word and his contractual agreement with his Master, the State. And the State has every right to rebuke, punish, or dissolve the corporation that it approved and created.
Of course, a real church or ministry has no need to incorporate under a State, or a federal auxiliary, to give it a pseudo-legitimacy. In fact, I believe that all state-incorporate "churches" have waived their right to have Christ as the Head of their church, preferring rather to have a Secretary of State and an Attorney General and the Head and regulator over their state-ordained Body.
So, Keller can laugh it off, or try to spin it as a spiritual comment, but he was clearly directing his listeners to not vote for a specific candidate. Maybe since Kellers ministry is an "Internet ministry" he figures he doesn't have much to lose, financially or property-wise. Regardless of the reasoning (Protestants despise Mormonism), Keller is in error because he apparently applied for the state corporation and the 501 (c) 3 status, yet he now seem to think he doesn't have to be obedient to his Master, the State, saying "Bring it on."
The IRS will probably rebuke Keller and the Board of Directors quitely, if Keller promises to shut-up. Or they might make an exampe of Kellar by shutting him down for his breech of agreement.
Peace to you all,

Just for my own information, I checked Kellar's website, and he is a state-incorporated, 501 (c) 3 organization:
"Liveprayer.Com is operated 100% through donations. As part of Bill Keller Ministries, a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations to Liveprayer.Com are tax deductible. The monthly budget for Liveprayer.Com is approx. $30,000. About half of that is the incredible amount of bandwidth used in the 24/7 LIVE video feed that is available to an unlimited number of streams at one time..."
I wasn't even sure who he was until I saw his picture on the website, and I then recognized him as a figure that I've seen a couple of times while channel surfing on a TV set.
Peace to you all,
C. Livingstone |
