News: Amazing Discovery of an ancient letter found in the city of Corinth
Posted on Wednesday, April 04 @ 13:18:18 PDT by Samuel Frost

History Amazing Discovery of an ancient letter found in the city of Corinth. This letter was written in the early 60's C.E. It may possibly shed light on the resurrection controversy in that city as reflected upon in Paul's letter. Below is my translation.

"Greetings, dear brothers in Corinth! I hope all is well with you and your souls in our Lord Jesus Christ. I am urgently writing you with pains in my heart concerning certain teachers among you that follow Cephas and Apollos. They teach a Jewish doctrine and wish to enslave us to the Law. They also teach a resurrection of the dead which says that Jerusalem shall be the capitol of the world at the coming of Messiah. It is my understanding, and this I have learned from our beloved Apostle Paul, that there is no resurrection of the dead as such. We, brothers, have life in Christ and are to follow Christ. The dead have perished as even Isaiah says, "they are now dead, they live no more. They shall not be raised." The psalmist agrees, "I am set apart with the dead, who you remember no more, who are cut off from your care." (These quotes are from Isaiah 26.14 and Ps. 88.5, editor). Yet, these Jews teach that the dead will rise, and that they, that is, the Jews, shall rule over the nations!

These Jews have come into our midst with their laws and observances, some of whom want us to practice the same customs. Some have even reported to others that our women should be silent according to the Law when even the Spirit moves upon them to speak in other languages or prophesy! They hamper the Spirit for the observance of their own Law! Yet, Paul has taught us that we have liberty in Christ and everything is permissible for us in Christ. I suppose our women should cover their heads with a veil, too!

Brothers, we know that we alone have the life in Christ, and that we alone have this hope. Those who have fallen asleep in Christ will share in the resurrection at his coming, but the dead will not. They have utterly perished, and if they have perished, but we who have faith in Christ through the gospel of Paul will not perish, then what does that say about them? The Law has no part in the life to come, and since we are already partakers in the life, we should have no part in the Law now. I believe I have Paul's authority here.

Paul has taught us how the body of Christ was raised, and how we are made members of that body, being raised with that body. How could the dead be members of that body? Think about it. Did they know Jesus, our Lord? Have they heard the gospel? Are we to believe that the dead from long ago will be raised in the body of Christ? How could this be? And, if they are not fellow members of this body, then with what body would they be raised? It would appear to me that if the dead were raised, then they have to be raised in another body altogether! I say it again, we have the life, we are the circumcision, and we and those of us who have fallen asleep in Christ will live forever with Jesus. We are a new nation of God's people, and we are the kings of that people. To think that God would raise that old nation and set it up again in his kingdom is anathema. These Jews who say they follow Cephas and James are to be avoided. They come from Jerusalem and they sneak into our congregations, spreading their lies saying "don't eat this" and "don't drink that!" Away with them! All things have been given to us apart from them. They have forfeited their own inheritance that we have been given in Christ, and because of this jealousy, they seek to enslave you all over again. We are the resurrection and the life in Christ, because it is we that have heard the good news of Jesus, and it is we that will triumph and be made into a new nation. The Lord be with you always."

This is awesome - Sam, do you have any more information about this manuscript and how/where it was found?

Also, just another off the wall question for all of us: If this was really written in the 60s and if the author speaks with Paul's authority, why is this not part of the "canon?" :)

Wow, this is one gem of a find, if authentic! I'm with Virgil, any more info/details on this would be wonderful!

Sam,

This letter needs to be taken very skeptically at first. We need to verify and verify again.
The provenance of this letter needs to be checked and rechecked again and again. Remember the Burial box of James that turned out to be a fraud. I would not begin to put stock in this letter also until permission is granted to do a very accurate dating of the material if at all possible. This letter seems to be a very sophisticated writer, maybe too sophisticated to be real. There appears the possibility of too many highly complex theological positions to jump on the band wagon without the strongest investigation possible.

As far as dating the material, the internal evidence seems overwhelming. But some recent research that I am doing in the ancient writings of the Jews and Christians seem to be very questionable. Some of these writings have been purported to predate Christ and then they discuss subjects that only some one after Christ would be aware of. It turns out that some of these writings were most likely penned by learned Christians as late as the fifth or sixth century AD instead.
So Let the buyer beware.
If it turns out to be true then Bingo we have something.

Blessings

Norm

This is not a real letter. This was written by Sam himself. It is a summary of the Gentile separatism that was going on in Corinth. They viewed Israel (the dead) as being lost and could not be in the body of Christ, thus the question of "if they are not fellow members of this body (the body of Christ), then with what body would they (Israel - the dead) be raised".

Sam references other sections of Scripture, but mostly 1 Corinthians, such as:

1 Cor 3 - "These Jews who say they follow Cephas and James are to be avoided."

1 Cor 10 (and Col 2:21) - "They come from Jerusalem and they sneak into our congregations, spreading their lies saying "don't eat this" and "don't drink that!"

Boy, how I wish something like this would be discovered!

Wouldn't it be great if we were to actually find Paul's first letter (what we call the 1st is really his second) to the Corinthians?

I have often wondered what more we would learn if we were to actual find more from Paul. I wonder how many Church "doctrines" would be destroyed with more information ie. the fleshly body resurrection, speaking in tongues, and... well, pretty much everything Catholic.

Yeah,

Who's the purported author of this "amazing" letter.

From the sound of it it could be someone as well known as Luke, as he was a companion of Paul and helped to amplify the New Testament with his writing.

Sam, you say you translated it. Was this manuscript from some graduate you have done. If so, please give us more details about where it was found, by whom, and when.

Or, is this a hoax that you are playing, Sam.

In any event, the subject matter seems helpful enough. I'm surprised there are not volumes of stuff like that to be found which helps to clarify a lot of topics about the early Church.

Peace to you all,
C. Livingstone

Folks,

The letter was written by me at about 2:00 pm in one setting. It's a hoax. Really, it's a hypothetical construction of what "some" of the Corinthians may have believed, based upon Max King's exegesis of I Co 15. "You are a very, very, bad man!"

Hey,

Does anybody have a copy of The Archko Volume?

Once upon a time, I had a paperback edition that contained a number of letters which purported to be written by a variety of Roman and Jewish authors (many of whom were characterized in New Testament writings) who were personally involved in the events leading up to and after the Crucifixion.

There was nothing at all in them that seemed contradictory to the New Testament. Most of it gave undelying support, I thought. There was even, if I remember correctly, a description of how Jesus tended to wear, what was at that time, an older fashion of clothing for a Jew, i.e. he looked old-school.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone here has an opinion about the Archko Volume, which was supposedly discovered in the 1800s, I think.

Peace to you all,
C. Livingstone
