You think you just got a problem and you got a devil. You think you just got a headache and you got a devil. You think you just got a problem with your bank account and you got a devil. You think you've got a problem with your temper and you've got a devil. You think you've got a problem with depression and you've got a devil. -- Rod Parsley, Praise The Lord, Dominion Camp Meeting; July 6, 1999 |

The Inner Revolution

"Thousands of people think that necessary changes come only from outside, from revolutions and change in external conditions. It is for us Christians to prove that in reality everything comes from inside - from faith and life according to faith. The Church, when she entered the Greco-Roman world, did not denounce slavery, did not call for a revolution. It was her faith, her new vision of man and life that progressively made slavery impossible."
- Alexander Schmemann, "Great Lent", P.104

Schmemann seems to have understood the fact that the Kingdom of God is an "inner" kingdom. Bishop Ware understood this as well. When we grasp this, we understand that change comes from within our hearts, thus expectations also change. Rather than seeing "evil" everywhere around us, we see the potential for good. Rather than seeing fallenness and sinfulness we see people who need our love and acceptance. Faith is at its core progressive and just as slavery was progressively rendered impossible, I think the other problems we face will meet the same fate. Of course, not because of us, but because of God's presence and the reality of his Kingdom.

Great post. And the Lord be with you this Lenten season! I am giving up smoking (remember I had to sneak outside last year at your conference! hehe). Anyhow, about the article. Yes, this is the view reflected in a recent Chalcedon article. Reconstructionism is from the inside>out and bottom up (instead of top down) view of transforming culture. They "see" are kids, our families (self government, familiy government). God's Spirit directs the collapse of nations, but throughout 2,000 years, which one institution has remained constant: the Body of Christ, gloriously shining, ever increasing!

This completely goes against the futurist mindset that someday Christ will come storming down in some literal cloud and set up a physical kingdom and do away with all evil etc..
Instead, the Kingdom is within (just as Christ said it was) and works from within man's heart spreading outward into the world.
I think this is what Preterism has to offer. This is the result of understanding the Kingdom is here now. We are not waiting for it.
Now if we (I) can only keep this proper perspective/mindset and allow God to work through us.
