Stem Cells Obtained from Amniotic Fluid

mick submitted: "In the Feb 28,2007 edition of JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Tracy Hampton, PhD, reports on the status of obtaining human stem cells from amniotic fluid (AFS). She quotes a study which concludes, AFS can be coaxed to become muscle, bone, fat, blood vessel and liver cells and MIGHT therefore be valuable for therapy.
She points out that the desired cells have been known to be available from the placenta and in amniotic fluid, but it has taken 7 years to develop and refine techniques to isolate the 1% of cells within the amniotic fluid that are stem cells. "Investigators at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School have now verified that isolated AFS cells are TRUE stem cells that are capable of self-renewal."
"Stem cells isolated from amniotic fluid have several advantages over embryonic and adult stem cells: they are readily accessible, they replicate rapidly in culture, they do not require the support of other "feeder" cells that can cause contamination, they do not form tumors in vivo.
Based on findings of researchers it is thought that AFS cells MIGHT be capable of repairing damaged tissues resulting from conditions such as spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Alzheimer disease and stroke. The next step in the investigation process is to test AFS cells in animal models of disease.
Finally she points out that around 100,00 specimens would be able to supply 99% of the U.S. population with a perfect genetic match for transplantation.
The complete article can be found in JAMA Feb 28, 2007 Vol 297, No. 8 page 795
All caps words, except 'AFS', are from me."

Seriously, this is great news. As technology advances, it seems like we'll be able to harvest stem cells from almost any source without harming an adult or an unborn baby. I wonder how this will affect the debate regarding stem cell lines from destroyed embryos. |
