The Five Points Of Calvinism Examined
Posted on Monday, February 05 @ 06:14:20 PST by Kent

Debate by Allan Turner
There are five main pillars upon which the superstructure of Calvinism rests. These are technically known as "The Five Points of Calvinism."1 In this section, we will make a critical examination of each of these, holding them up to the light of Scripture. It should be understood that the Five Points are not random, isolated, nor independent doctrines. Rather, they are "so inter-related that they form a simple, harmonious, self-consistent system."2 Calvinism, although terribly flawed, is amazingly logical in its parts. If one were to concede that the first point of Calvinism (viz., "Total Depravity") were true, then all four of the following points would necessarily follow. Of course, the opposite is also true. Prove any one of the Five Points of Calvinism wrong and the entire system must be surrendered. Is Calvinism a Pre-70ad doctrine or does it apply to us today.

The question at the end of the paragraph was not asked by the original author and needs to be separated from the rest of the paragraph.

Kent,

Calvinism neither applied to pre-AD 70 nor does it apply today.

Calvinism has at least two false Aristotlian presuppositions. One of these, modern Calvinists widely recognize, but none of them has allowed it to change their views.

Aristotle taught that time is infinite and uncreated. Besides Plato, I'm aware of no evidence that anyone, anywhere ever seriously questioned this view until Einstein's general theory of relativity became widely accepted.

Calvin effectively placed God in time and subject to time. This had to have had significant ramifications on his theology. Today, most Calvinists pretend to follow Einstein and claim time was created. But their Calvinism is unchanged by this. Their God is no different than Calvin's God who was stuck in time. Calvinism is still attached to an Aristotlian view.

Secondly, as the article states, Calvinism assumes determinism. Deteriminism implies that given enough information, we could in principle predict the future as accurately as God can.

The growth of quantum theory has brought that assumption into question. Our universe appears to be highly ordered and deterministic on the large scale. But on very small scales, it is random and indeterministic. On the sub-atomic scale, the past, present, and future are not determined. That is, not even God knows or can know what the state of everythin is. Yet on the large scale, everything is determined.

This issue strikes at the very heart of all forms of determinism.

Let the screaming begin.

Quantum theory (not Quantum fact) would have implications for Monism and not Biblical Theism. Since JESUS creates, sustains, maintains, provides for ALL creation "Declaring the end from the beginning and the things that are not as if they are saying 'MY counsel shall stand and I will do all MY pleasure' we all should remain(deterministically) SCREAMING CaLvINIsTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Patricia, you are a total piece of junk!" "Theodore, you are total piece of junk! "Both of you are worthless! You cannot even do anything right!"

That is what the first leaf in the t-u-l-i-p is saying. I can read.

However, heaven speaks closer to this: "Patricia, I see something beautiful in you!" "Theodore, I see something beautiful in you!" "I have always seen this beauty in you!" "Unfortunately, this beauty has not been able to blossom as it should." "But I am going to do something so that your beauty, which I already see in you, may blossom forth!"

Did Jesus go to the cross to show how sovereign He was in being able to love a piece of junk? Or did Jesus go to the cross because he had beheld something that already has an inherent beauty?

Do you know what is missing in the t-u-l-i-p?

"God is love."

Not as a 2nd principle, nor a 3rd principle, nor a 4th, nor a 5th.

But at its very foundation.

JohnM
