Funny Stuff
I just picked up my Bible and I held it and I pointed it at one of the edges of the spine and I said Spirit, in the Name of Jesus Christ, my Bible says this is a sword and I command that you be run through with this sword and tormented until you obey me, and I just took the Bible and the edge of the spine and shoved it right at the chest of this man and the demon screamed, Why did you stab me with that thing?! Get it out of me! Take it away! All right, I'll do what you want me to do!

Preterism: What verses are for today?
Posted on Thursday, October 12 @ 20:55:53 PDT by toddst

Mailbag You know the criticism against preterism--if it is true, then there are no verses in Scripture for today's Christians. That rests on a faulty understanding of the covenantal aspect of the book of the Revelation to John. After the old bride of "Babylon" is divorced, stoned, and done away with (according to Levitical law), we read in Rev 21 about the new heaven and new earth, and the new bride coming down from heaven.

The New Covenant has officially been ratified. And with this new covenant, as with the Mosaic, we have curses and blessings: We read, "cursed are all liars, fornicators, etc." in chapter 21. The blessings are then given: "blessed are the faithful, etc." These blessings and curses are the same as in the book of Deutoronomy. So, if anyone asks you to show a verse that would apply today--show them Chapter 21, and tell them that God has now an official covenant with the nations, not just providentially by right of creator in the old testament, but redemptive as well in the New!

All the verses are for today. (Score: 1)

I like your word "ratified". Ratified contains the concept of having been put together and engaged. That is the proper concept for the New Covenant...it is not void now that it is fulfilled-it is engaged. For example-Under the Jewish covenant in-say-550 BC, there were historical accounts, prophecies that had been given and fulfilled, moral directives, wisdom teaching, etc. These were all for those who lived under the covenant. The fact that the prophecies regarding the Babylonian destruction had been fulfilled in the past would not have led anyone to think "none of the covenant writings are for us". They recognized that there was wisdom and teaching in the prophecies and fulfillments that were not given directly to them, but were written for them to learn from and make application. Paul even states in 1 Corinthians 10:1-"Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they are written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. It is patently offensive and a rational twist to say that because prophecies recorded in a covenant have been fulfilled the words of the covenant are no longer effective. The old covenant remained in force until set aside by God and the new covenant (Heb. 8:13), not because it contained prophecies that had subsequently been fulfilled. The new covenant has been instituted. All the verses were written for us, our children and all subsequent generations. It contains moral guidance, directives for growth, counsel for marriage and family, guidance for worship and spiritual growth, etc. The fact that it contains prophecies that have been fulfilled in no way implies there are no verses for us. We have an eternal covenant supplying us with "all things that pertain to life and Godliness", as Peter said. The fact that all the promises and prophecies have been fulfilled is a bold endorsement of the validation of all the scriptures "profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, the (we)may be complete, equip ed for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Appreciated you post very much!
