News: DID PILATE GET THE QUESTION RIGHT?
Posted on Sunday, April 30 @ 20:34:22 PDT by Paul

Other Was "what is truth?" the most appropriate question to ask the King of kings? There is a fundamental distinction between the nature of a question concerning what is, and the nature of other types of questions that we can ask.

I am increasingly persuaded, the longer that I live, that many of the spiritual and intellectual conflicts are more related to what we ask than what reply is given. Look at polls, with results which often make it appear that otherwise sane human beings actually believe radically opposite things. Discover the "spin" in the question, and poll results become less puzzling. Pro-life and pro-abortion pollsters have produced significant majorities in politics by how they asked the question. One would think that the majority of modern scientists never think about God, creation, and issues of eternity by some polls, but would be quite amazed at the frequency of scientific minds being fascinated with the ultimate questions of existence, by other polls. Point: getting the question right matters.

Pontius Pilate asked Jesus Christ a question which does capture the most basic inquiry related to anything that we want to know...almost, that is! What is truth certainly is a necessary question for any philosophical proposition, with implications for the content of the examination of religious ideas, the performance of markets, the advantages and disadvantages of surgical procedures, and many other things. Except for a few matters which we can attempt to objectively examine, what is truth is the great question of the ages, whether Pilate was posing it sincerely or not.

But, there is a better question for anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, and for anyone who does not yet believe in Jesus Christ. It may or may not convert you, if you do not believe. It may or may not confirm you, if you do believe in Jesus Christ. It will, however, raise the bar about the importance of the subject.

We who confess that Jesus Christ is the only Savior of mankind have many "whats" that we do not see eye to eye regarding. This fact is obvious by perusing the Planet Preterist website, and many others. But, we agree that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Savior of the world, and the King of kings. The most appropriate question for all to ask, as I see it, whether you believe in Jesus Christ or not, is "Who Is the Truth?". That question, if we really mean it, compels us to compare the credibility of Jesus Christ against all who oppose the claims of His disciples about Who He Was and Is. Ask yourself "Who is the Truth?" and see where it goes.

Paul, I love this! I often ponder Jesus personifying truth to such an extent that He IS truth. It's an amazing thing to ponder. And what if Jesus would be standing in front of you, what would you ask him? We often think about all these things...asking Him questions like "is this theological point correct...or am I right or wrong on that point?"

But I also realize that if these issues were that important they would be dealt with straightforward in the Scripture...and many are not. Instead, as I said in another comment, Jesus gave us in the most plain way the answer to the greatest question and commandment: "Love the Lord your God." And the second most important was "Love your neighbor as yourself." He also taught his followers to "love your enemy and bless those who persecute you."

Quid est veritas, Pilate asked? The two greatest truths proclaimed by Jesus involve love.

The Truth (Christ) was dripping with love for mankind. Love shows the way to who Truth is. Perhaps Pilate came to watch Jesus dying in love for us and finally got an answer to his question. :)

Thanks Paul!

I remember using this same question in one of my philosophy classes in college (long time ago)and lamenting that Pilate did never get a verbal answer from one of the greatest "philosophers" of all time. It certainly would have been fun to actually hear what it would have sounded like.

Unfortunate that many do not look to the historical person of Jesus for truth, but rather to themselves.
