Of Dentists And Worldviews

Flakinde submitted: "Today I read a
short entry on Seth
Godin's blog entitled "The painless dentist", which really made me think about how our worldviews affect our ability to process reality. Here it is:
A friend complains, "I'm going to switch dentists."
Always inquisitive (on your behalf) and eager to share his tale of woe, I asked why.
Well, it turns out that the dentist was running five minutes early, only kept him in the chair for twenty minutes and had him out and on the road ahead of schedule.
Steve, it seems, doesn't think he's done his dental duty. He doesn't think his teeth are as clean as they were at the old dentist. It wasn't enough work.
Dentists are working like crazy to remarket themselves. They don't use words like 'drill' or 'pain'. They put tvs in the waiting room. They try to be on time and less painful.
Worldview matters. Steve's worldview is that a visit to the dentist should have all that dental overhead stuff in order to count.
This has been exactly my experience in sharing the message of fulfilled eschatology. I notice people often react in opposition to what I have to say, not because they have strong reasons to hold on to their current position, but because their worldview just cannot process this message. Just like the man who thinks that a dentist that doesn't offer pain and long waiting time is not a good dentist, so many Christians think that a gospel devoid of "end-time" disasters, tragic battles in the spiritual realms, and heavy burdens of sin through a valley of tears and shadows, is a gospel devoid of any value or appeal.
But shouldn't a good dentist be one who actually offers a no- or low-pain procedure? And in the same vein, shouldn't a gospel of triumph (like the one found in the Bible) be one in which there is actual freedom from sin, the actual Presence of God in His temple, actual peace?
I certainly think so.

Seth once asked the question "Why do supermarkets have special lanes for their worst customers?" Pretty amazing observation.
