Funny Stuff
On the inside of you, you will sense something prompting you to say words and syllables. Just open your mouth and let the words flow. I do not care if it is 'la, la, la,' or 'da, da, da.' The devil hates it all."

News: NBC's 'Book of Daniel' Sparks Fire-and-Brimstone Reaction
Posted on Thursday, December 29 @ 08:16:19 PST by John

News Conservative Christians are gearing up for a holy war of sorts over NBC's forthcoming show "The Book of Daniel," airing the first week of 2006. The American Family Association (AFA), a leading group in the Christian right movement, has called for a boycott of the series about a self-medicating Episcopalian priest whose son is gay, whose daughter deals pot and whose wife is a midday martini-lover.

The program "is an example of that network's anti-Christian bigotry," said the AFA in a press release widely distributed on Wednesday. The group claims that the network has received more than 400,000 e-mails complaining about the show.

NBC executives could not immediately be reached to confirm that statistic or respond to the AFA's threat of a boycott and characterization of "The Book of Daniel."

A day earlier, "Book of Daniel" star Aidan Quinn — who plays the Rev. Daniel Webster — called the series "a pretty down-the-middle, wholesome show."

"I honestly don't think it's going to be nearly as controversial as some people may now be afraid of," Quinn told The Associated Press. "It just has the courage to deal with some of the real issues that go in on people's lives."

Webster is shown having visions of and conversations with Jesus Christ in the flesh and has such a bizarro extended family that his priesthood and parish are in jeopardy of forging a relationship with the mafia.

"I'm an Episcopalian priest who struggles with a little self-medication problem, and I have a 23-year-old son who's gay, and a 16-year-old daughter who's caught dealing pot, and another son who's jumping on every high school girl he sees, and a wife who's very loving but also likes her martinis," Quinn told the AP.

"I can't tell you how many people have said to me, 'Hey, that sounds like my family.'"

The AFA begs to differ, blasting NBC and the show.

"The decision by NBC to air the series reflects the anti-Christian bias which exists at the highest levels of the network," AFA chairman Donald Wildmon said in the press release. "Christian-bashing is in style at NBC."

"The Book of Daniel" premieres Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. EST with two back-to-back episodes, before moving to its regular 10 p.m. slot the following week.

With all the crap that's been going on in the Episcopal church the last couple of decades, I find it hard to believe that AFA gives a hoot. Perhaps Wildmon should be boycotting the Episcopal church. hehehe.

But, just like Hollywood, did you notice that Quinn said that all the folks he talks to said that it sounds like their family. Has Quinn talked to any of you? He didn't call me up, that's for sure.

In all seriousness, does anyone remember "Seventh Heaven?" A Methodist minister whose family deals with a variety of issues (pretty tame comparatively). Did Wildmon boycott that one? What about "Highway to Heaven?" Jesus was rarely mentioned. Did Wildmon boycott that one? I could go on and on. The reality of it is that Aidan Quinn has never had much star power - this series will go the way of so many others. 13 episodes, and then NOTHING. It will die with a whimper. Unless, the scripts get more positive and optimistic - hey, could happen!

NBC wouldn't dare allow such grotesque, vilifying, hypocritical caricatures to be drawn of people of Judaism or Islam. Such a program would never see the light of day. But it's "open season" when it comes to smearing Christianity.

What's more, NBC's local affiliates should be questioning the business sense in airing programming that stereotypes and defames over 100 million Americans nationwide. It's not merely bad business, it's stupid business.

Everyone here at Planet Preterist should take five minutes to make a phone call to the General Manager or Community Affairs Director at your local NBC station and request that they not air defamatory anti-christian bile and bigotry. Businesses respond to public outcries and they hate becoming embroiled in negative publicity. Make that call, folks.

Well,

In much the same way that the knee-jerk reactions by certain Jewish leaders to the previews of Mel Gibson's The Passion garnered extra attention and revenue for the film, I'm sure that the knee-jerk reaction by leading Evangelical groups will give some added support to the new TV series, at least initially.

I think the Hollywood Media, both TV and Film, has either bashed or been overly kind to just about every group there is. I mean Politicians, Corporate managers, and Clergy have all been portrayed in both good and bad light, at times, and rightly so.

Churchgoers and Jewish organizations seem to be the ones to send up the Persecution and Bigotry flag before anyone else when somebody looks at them cross-eyed, figuratively speaking.

If the new series is too unrealistic or corny it will probably flop. Although, Seventh Heaven is still going.

Suppose there was a TV mini-series about The Fall of the High And Mighty Jimmy Swaggert, which depicted his real-life infidelity with prostitutes. Or a TV series on the looting by the PTL orgainzation (maybe that show was actually done, if I remember right). Or a special series on how a gal on the 700 Club (Shelia Walsh) was secretly hiding her deep Depression even while supposedly being the vehicle for miraculous healings via Words of Knowledge to millions of TV viewers. Or how about a TV series that includes a sub-plot that depicts a cliche of pedophile Priests who meet to drink wine and swap stories about which methods they've used to rape little boys and girls. Now, all of that is reality, as we all know. So, no churchgoing organization could rightly claim "anti-Christian bias" if Hollywood righted depicted reality.

It seems pretty wimpy to me that some churchgoers would whine over a fictional series that may be a tame version of what may be close to average for what reality is.

Quite honestly, I've noticed that the last TV season or two has had some bright new shows for a change.

Peace to you all,
C. Livingstone

It seems to me that the reaction of Christians to what unbelievers do is driven by a great deal of paranoia. The Christian churches (Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant) who have a futurist eschatology have a very pessimistic view of history. They all see the future (last days) in a very foreboding light. For example, at the end of history (before the Lord returns) there is a great apostasy in the church and sinful men are winning the day. As you all know there are many other thoughts that are part of this mix (Mt. 24.…)

PR 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

The “Preterist” view which believes in a “world without end”, “your work is not in vain” and understands that we are already living in Gods’ everlasting kingdom is a much more hopeful teaching. Personally, I take a very long view of history. I believe we are only in the very early stages of God’s kingdom. (See the parables of the kingdom as described in the parables of the mustard seed and leaven).

DA 6:26 "I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.

"For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.

DA 6:27 He rescues and he saves;
he performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions."

I believe in freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom of speech, etc. If I don't like the program, I simply change the channel. I certainly don't want some program police deciding for me what to watch, I prefer to decide for myself - I'm a grown up and thank God almighty that I am a free one.

I don't see this as an "attack on Christianity" -- what does Christianity have to defend? That some Christian families have problems? Perhaps dealing with those issues rather than denying them in the name of a religion would encourage solutions.

If it's a joke and untrue, then it will be obvious and funny (because of the irony).

BTW, I am a Spongebob fan too!

I recorded the show on my DVR, watched it today. What awful trash. Jesus is portrayed as a silly class clown, very shallow. All of the Peskypalion clery in the show are portrayed very badly: Daniel the priest is addicted to Vicadin ala Brett Favre, the snooty old woman bishop is implied to be divorced and she takes a few of his pills and begs for more, his father is a bishop in another area, married to a woman with alzheimers which makes her really mean. At the end of the show he's shown getting dressed after having an apparently regular trist with the aforementioned bishop. They all chug a lot of booze on the show.

What is really bad is what they endorse and condone in the show. Daniel gives premarital counselling to a couple that lives together, has sex together, the girl gets "stoned" when they do it, and he's ok with all of that. He and his lush hug each other as the watch their homosexual son leave the house, expressing their hope that he finds a good man. When the male and female bishops cool off, he expresses his remorse that they're doing it, but that he hasn't had sex with his ill wife in over four years. She tells him that under such circumstances it is ok.

When Hollywood makes movies like Top Gun, they consult the Navy to make it as realistic as possible. When they make movies about other cultures, technical topics, etc., they work with "experts" of sorts. No person that knows and loves God would make or have any part of such gratuitous trash.
