The New Last Days Scoffers
Posted on Monday, November 28 @ 21:39:45 PST by Randall East

Preterism As a follow-up to my previous posting, National Liberty Journal also has an article discussing preterism. Dr. Hindson of Libery Univeristy goes so far as to say that preterism "Diminishes the Hope of the Believer." and compares preterism to "Jehovah's Witnesses".

DR. EDWARD HINDSON Assistant to the Chancellor Liberty University

The Second Coming of Christ is one of the fundamental doctrines of Scripture. Jesus emphatically said, “I will come again” (John 14:3). The questions raised by believers over the centuries have always been “When?” and “How?” The answers to these questions divide Christians into various views of eschatology (“last things”). Some believe He will come before the Tribulation. Some believe He’ll return during it; and some after it. Some believe He will come at the end of the Church Age and some think He will come after the millennium. One of the most bizarre interpretations of eschatology is the view that He has already come back! No, I’m not talking about the Jehovah’s Witnesses who think Jesus returned in 1914. I’m talking about a viewpoint called Preterism, which teaches that Jesus returned in AD 70 when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem.

“there shall come scoffers in the last days…saying, where is the promise of his coming” (II Peter 3:3-4).

What a baseless charge. Preterists would never say such a thing. If anything it’s the futurists that have been caught up in this snafu.

1. Destroys the Literal Meaning of the Bible.
Yeah, sort of like how this generation refers to a generation thousands of years into the future. Then again, perhaps occurrences like 2000 yr old zombies climbing out of their graves, people levitating into the clouds, locusts with human heads and a woman riding on a dragon are much more believable.

2. Distorts the Promise of the Second Coming. Placing the return of Christ in the past robs the Church of a confident expectation about the future.

Robs the church? If anything Preterism accurately confirms the promise of the parousia. Preterism places confidence in the present realization that Christ is now with us.

3. Diminishes the Hope of the Believer. Preterism negates the biblical commands to “watch” and “be ready” for the coming of Christ. It limits those injunctions to the first century believers prior to AD 70. In fact, it limits every biblical command related to the return of Christ.

Futurists would rather have hope in something tangible in the distance rather than enjoy a spiritual presence here and now - talk about diminishing! The command to watch was given to the disciples - much like their command to travel around the cities of Israel and heal the sick and cast out demons(Matt 10:8). Ever hear about a concept called audience relevance? It's pretty simple to determine which commands of Christ were specific to a group of people as opposed to universal application (Love your neighbor).

4. Deprives Israel of Her Future. Preterists insist that God is finished with Israel. In essence, Preterism pits Jesus against Israel and therefore smacks of anti-Semitism. Preterists actually teach that the “Babylon” of Revelation 17-18 is Jerusalem!

You incorrectly call Preterists scoffers, insinuate Heresy and now lob the anti-Semitism charge. The church (ekklesia) began with Israel. John the Baptist and Christ called Jews to ekklesia - be called out of and congregate to discuss the spiritual matters of God. Israel was the church up until we see gentiles being grafted in. Christ (and Paul) write how the Jewish old covenant law was passing away to make room for a new covenant open to both Jew and gentile. Perhaps the book of Hebrews is a good start - feel free to call the author anti-Semitic.

5. Denies the Power of Christ. While most preterists would insist they are defending the power of Christ, they are actually denying it. They are trying to “bring in the Kingdom” without the King. Christianity is under attack like never before.

Again, Preterists believe the King came in AD 70 so yes, the kingdom and King are both here. As far as Christianity being under attack in today's day; imagine what it was like for the original followers of Christ. My guess is you can't even begin to comprehend the persecution and tribulation these disciples went through. The apostles gave their lives to spread the good news of the new covenant so we could be spared such a price.

By confining predictive prophecy to a past fulfillment they eliminate any real need for eschatology

I never thought I'd hear someone complaining that God as already fulfilled His will. But by all means, continue to believe that this generation is the center of eschatological significance and that the Word of God was written directly to you. Please, go ahead and throw out any type of literary guidelines, cultural significance and historical evidence just because you can't see a 7' Jesus sitting on a jewel-encrusted, gold-plated throne in the clouds.

Just out of curiosity, what exactly would God's overcoming global purpose be for an entire nation of apostate idolaters who reject Him? What possible eschatological significance could they have but to be judged for the murder of the Messiah but to be judged for it?
