Preterism: National Liberty Journal (Jerry Falwell Ministries) examines Hank Hanegraaff’s book, The Last Disciple
Posted on Monday, November 28 @ 14:09:28 PST by Randall East

Books DR. NORMAN L. GEISLER Southern Evangelical Seminary
There are many reasons I am writing this congenial response to author Hank Hanegraaff’s recent views expressed in his novel, The Last Disciple. First, Hank and I are longtime friends and have discussed this topic many times. Second, we both agree that the issue here is not one of orthodoxy vs. unorthodoxy since no great fundamental of the faith is being denied on either side. We are both fighting in the same orthodox trench against the same unorthodox enemies of the faith. Third, I have been a faithful defender of Hank against the many false charges leveled against him and have thereby earned the right to offer some friendly criticism of his view. Fourth, Hank knows I have a strong commitment to the premillennial futurist view or the rapture that is opposed in The Last Disciple.

I have been asked by numerous constituents whether I agree with Hank’s position. In brief, my answer is that we agree on all the essentials of the faith, but on the question of the biblical “last days,” Hank knows I do not agree with his opposition to the futurist view. Hence, as longtime friends, we just agree to disagree agreeably. In all fairness, Hank promises a fuller expression of his position in a forthcoming book. But based on what he has written, my comments will be listed after the citations from Hank Hanegraaff’s statements. It is in this spirit that I offer a friendly response to his book The Last Disciple (sometimes listed as LD) and statements on it taken primarily from a January interview (hereafter designated “I”) printed on Hanegraaff’s Christian Research Institute (CRI) website: www.equip.org/abouthank/tyndale.pdf. In all fairness, Hank promises a fuller expression of his position in a forthcoming book. But based on what he has written, my comments will be listed after the citations from Hank Hanegraaff’s statements.

"However, The Last Disciple does not appear to measure up to the standards of its own alleged literal method. In rejecting a futurist interpretation of Revelation, The Last Disciple must reject a literal interpretation of many passages in Revelation and in Matthew 24-25 which they claim were fulfilled in the first century."

They don't mention that Hank is a partial preterist, of course, which would undermine the entire context of this analysis.

"And if this same non-literal method were applied to other passages like the Gospels, then it would undermine historical Christianity. Hence, the issue is of great importance. So, on this matter we must respectfully disagree agreeably with our good friend Hank Hanegraaff."

Awww..it's so cute to see one futurist respectfully disagreeing with another; and it's so sad to see absolutely no respect when they disagree with us Preterists.

Dispensationalism, with its wooden literal hermeutic, is in big trouble. Brother Falwell chides those who don't interpret Revelation literally. Not once however, in all the appearances of Jesus in Revelation, is it a literal portrayal. He is portrayed as a slain lamb most of the time, a male child in Rev. 12, has a sword for a tongue in Rev. 19. White hair, holding 7 stars in His hand in Rev. 1. Never once is He depicted in a literal manner. Our Dispy brethren are in trouble and the more they state their position the worse it looks.

Well,

That's nice to hear, Coderguy.

Maybe you can demonstrate that with a real example.

I was just interacting with your fellow Dispensationalist, ThomasS, regarding the recent "Rapture" article here. He stubbornly.insists that Rome is the proper interpretation of Rev. 11:8, when the identification is clearly Jerusalem, using both figurative and literal language.

"And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified." Rev. 11:8

Peace to you,
C. Livingstone
