by Amie May ...It was important that the woman remain silent, and allow her head to speak. The law applied literally in Old Testament days, was a shadow of a spiritual reality. Again, the Holy Spirit spoke through the Bride of Christ. If they began to try to interpret things themselves, and teach from themselves, confusion would be created. It was important that the Gospel be spread in all Truth. Paul had described how those having gifts must use them with a sense of order. Those who didn't readily have a message from the Spirit, should keep quiet.
And here he comes
John 14
26 but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and shall remind you of all things that I said to you.
John 16
5 But now I am going to Him who sent Me. And not one of you asks Me, Where are You going?
6 But because I have said these things to you, grief has filled your heart.
7 ¶ But I tell you the truth, it is advantageous for you that I should go; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.
8 And having come, that One will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.
9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe into Me;
10 and concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you no longer see Me;
11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12 I have yet many things to tell you, but you are not able to bear now.
13 But when that One comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you into all Truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will announce the coming things to you.
14 That One will glorify Me, for He will receive from Mine and will announce to you.
15 All things which the Father has are Mine. For this reason I said that He receives from Mine, and will announce to you.
Jesus was coming to them through the Holy Spirit and the Spirit would speak through those who would receive him. As Jesus says in John 16:7, he would send the Spirit to them.
They could expect to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
John 1
33 And I did not know Him, but the One sending me to baptize in water, that One said to me, On whomever you see the Spirit coming down and abiding on Him, this is the One baptizing in the Holy Spirit.
Acts 9:17 and 18 describe the baptism of Paul in the Holy Spirit:
Acts 9
17 And Ananias went away and entered into the house. And putting hands on him he said, Brother Saul, the Lord has sent me, Jesus, the One who appeared to you in the highway on which you came, that you may see and be filled of the Holy Spirit.
18 And instantly it was as if scales fell away from his eyes. And rising up at the thing happening, he was baptized.
Afterward, verse 22 reads that "Saul was more filled with power, and he confounded the Jews living in Damascus, proving that this One is the Christ."
Those filled with the Holy Spirit were endowed with gifts of healing, prophesying, speaking in tongues, interpreting, and other works of power. They were all to the purpose of spreading the Gospel. Truth reigned through them, even Christ speaking through them by the Spirit. Some examples of that are:
1 Cor 12
3 Because of this I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, Jesus is a curse. And no one is able to say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 1
1 ¶ Paul, an apostle, not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, the One raising Him from the dead,
In spreading the Gospel of Christ, through Christ, they reigned with him and delivered judgment to the world. They were given authority to carry out this function, inheriting the titles "Kings" and "Priests".
Matthew 19
28 And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, You who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Revelation 1
3 ¶ Blessed is the one reading, and those hearing the Words of this prophecy, and keeping the things having been written; for the time is near.
4 John to the seven assemblies in Asia: Grace to you, and peace, from the One who is, and who was, and who is coming, and from the seven spirits which are before His throne;
5 even from Jesus Christ the Faithful Witness, the First-born out of the dead, and the Ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him loving us and washing us from our sins by His blood,
6 and made us kings and priests to God, even His Father. To Him is the glory and the might forever and ever. Amen.
The deliverance of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 marked the beginning of the resurrection. In John 3, verses 1-8 a conversation is recorded between Jesus and a man from the Pharisees, Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He says to Jesus "Rabbi, we know that You have come as a teacher from God. For no one is able to do these miraculous signs which You do, except God be with Him." Jesus replies that unless one is generated from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God. Judging by Nicodemus' reaction, he seems to already know that the arrival of Messiah also means the arrival of the kingdom of God. Nicodemus then asks him "How is a man able to be generated, being old? He is not able to enter into his mother's womb a second time and be born?" Jesus's reply in part is "That having been generated out of the flesh is flesh, and that having been generated out of the Spirit is spirit. Do not wonder because I said to you, You must be generated from above. The Spirit breathes where He desires, and you hear His voice; but you do not know from where He comes, and where He goes; so is everyone having been generated from the Spirit." Nicodemus seemed perplexed and asks how those things (the generation through the Spirit) would be able to occur. Paraphrasing a great deal, Jesus's answer is through his death and resurrection.
Romans 6
3 Or are you ignorant that all who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
4 Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, so also we should walk in newness of life.
And here we have the description of the rebirth of a nation, even as prophesied in Isaiah 66. Adopted through that rebirth, they reigned with Christ with a rod of iron.
Those "of Israel" by blood, who "were Israel" by faith as well would be counted for the seed of Abraham according to Romans 9:6-8. They were those called out, even, the elect. Through them, all Israel would be saved.
Romans 11
26 and so all Israel will be saved, even as it has been written, "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
27 And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins." Isa. 59:20, 21
As well, Gentiles would be grafted in to their tree of inheritance though only to the purpose of provoking those called out to jealousy.
Romans 10
19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First, Moses says, "I will provoke you to jealousy by a non-nation, by an unwise nation I will anger you." Deut. 32:21
20 But Isaiah is very bold and says, "I was found by those not seeking Me; I became known to those not inquiring after Me." Isa. 65:1
Romans 11
11 I say, then, Did not they stumble that they fall? Let it not be! But by their slipping away came salvation to the nations, to provoke them to jealousy.
The logic behind the idea that this has since come to a close, is that there is no more Israel. She, also known as Eve, put off the federal headship of Adam, and has fallen into the arms of the King of Kings. Jesus came to her through the Holy Spirit and washed her sins away. She was dying to the law and becoming purified. In her death throes, she was reborn a virgin: The Bride. It is in her, that Jesus began to arrive.
Fire
Once more back to the beginning:
Genesis 3
22 ¶ And Jehovah God said, Behold! The man has become as one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put forth his hand and also take from the Tree of Life, and eat, and live forever,
23 Jehovah God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground out of which he was taken.
24 And He drove the man out. And He lodged the cherubs at the east of the Garden of Eden, and the flaming sword whirling around to guard the way of the Tree of Life.
To access the tree of life, one would have to pass through the fire..
Daniel chapter 3 is record of the story of "Rack" (Meshach), "Shack" (Shadrach), and "Benny" (Abednego). The King of Babylon built an image of himself and all those who refused to bow to it would be cast into the fiery furnace. Chaldeans slandered Rack, Shack, and Benny saying that they would not bow before the image. The King then calls for them and asked if the claims were true. Rack, Shack, and Benny replied "If it is so that our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning, fiery furnace, then He will deliver out of your hand, O king. And if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up."
The King grew angry and had the fire stoked. Rack, Shack, and Benny were bound and cast into the blazing hot fiery furnace. The King was witness to their walking unharmed through the fire, with a fourth who was "like unto a son of God". God had delivered them from the King's hand.
Rack, Shack, and Benny demonstrated enormous faith in God's deliverance, just as the Bride of Christ would. She would not be harmed when passing through the flames and entering into the presence of the tree of life.
Betrothal
In the Old Testament, pledges were given to ensure that a promise would be kept. We find this act in association with a pledge of marriage in Genesis 38:17-20. A pledge would often be in the form of a ring that the family seal sat upon.
Covering ones self with a veil was an act of humility and a sign of deference. Having received a pledge, such covering was understood as accepting his advances (See Gen 24, esp vs 65). A woman who was not betrothed and veiled herself, was considered in deference to all men and a harlot (Gen 38:13-15).
Another form of demonstrating deference by the bride to be was by entering into the bridal chamber to await her Bridegroom (Joe 2:16, Matt 25:1-13). She kept a lamp burning as a sign of her readiness. This is played out later when the Bridegroom comes for his Bride and removes the veil from the temple. The bridegroom would come to collect his bride and the consummation would take place. A woman was found to be missing her token of virginity was worthy of death (Deut. 22:13-21).
Consummation was not necessary however, as per determining the validity of the marriage. It was always the promise that counted (See Matt 1:18).
Paul writes his concerns to the church in Corinth:
2 Corinthians 11
1 ¶ I would that you endured me a little in foolishness, but, indeed, endure me.
2 For I am jealous over you with a jealousy of God. For I have promised you to one Man, to present you a pure virgin to Christ.
3 But I fear lest by any means, as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness, so your thoughts should be corrupted from the purity which is due to Christ.
4 For if, indeed, the one coming proclaims another Jesus, whom we have not proclaimed, or if you receive another spirit which you have not received, or another gospel which you never accepted, you might well endure these.
If they became deceived as the serpent deceived Eve, it would compromise their purity. If they were drawn in by the law, then by that law they would suffer death (Deut. 22:13-21). The previous husband had been called Adam. After becoming pure, or born again, they were then presentable to a new spouse. Their head must remain veiled however, until the bridegroom completed gathering them all. They would not be permitted to remove the veil until the full passing of their first husband. A wife after all, is bound to the first husband until death.
A widow
Adam was to the Old Covenant, as Jesus was to the New Covenant. "And as it is reserved to men once to die, and after this, Judgment;" (Hebrews 9:27). Interestingly enough, the word translated in Hebrews 9:27 as "men" is translated "man" approximately 552 other times. Reconsider the statement using a consistent translation: "And as it is reserved to man once to die, and after this, Judgment;"
Paul says that in Adam all die (1 Cor 15:22) ("..it is reserved to man once to die.."). He says that the "first man" was made a living soul, and equating Jesus to the second man, says that the second man was a life giving spirit (1 Cor 15:45). He goes on to describe the differences between the first man (who is reserved to die once) and the second man. Anyone in Christ, therefore, became a new creation (2 Cor 5:17). They died to the old man, and put on the new (Eph 4:24).
The prognosis for Adam as federal head was bleak. His headship was waxing old and passing away because his kingdom was (Hebrews 8:13). Eventually, the Kingdom would be turned completely over to the Father and any other rule or authority will be gone (1 Cor 15:24). Eventually, Adam would die just as it was reserved for him to do, though he would be risen the new man in Jesus.
The Word of God (Which was God - John 1:1) came in the flesh (John 1:14). He died in the flesh and was risen again, defeating it. The flesh/earthy man (adam) was then cast off and the new creation remained.
Eve's old husband was passing away, and she was becoming ready for her new one.
With new eyes
Now considering that the federal/covenantal headship of "adam" or "man" or "husband" was being placed under the authority of Christ or "bridegroom" and passing away; as well as considering that Eve could have two outcomes which were to be reborn a virgin as "bride", or becoming "mother of harlots" (seen as barren), I ask that you read these texts with this perhaps new understanding. (My words in parenthesis)
1 Cor 11
1 ¶ Be imitators of me, as I am also of Christ.
2 But I praise you, brothers, that in all things you have remembered me, and even as I delivered them to you, you hold fast the doctrines.
3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man (OC man/Adam), and the man is the head of a woman (Eve/the church), and God is the head of Christ.
4 Every man praying or prophesying, having anything down over his head shames his head.(He still under a veil is OC man, and brings shame upon his head.)
5 And every woman praying or prophesying with the head unveiled dishonors her head, for it is the same as being shaved.(An unready bride/the church brings shame upon her head.)
6 For if a woman (the church) is not veiled, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn, or to be shaved, (because she is free from that law)let her be veiled (awaiting her bridegroom).
7 For truly a man (OC man/Adam) ought not to have the head covered, being the image and glory of God. But woman (the church/bride) is the glory of man (OC man);
8 for man (OC man) is not of the woman (the church/bride), but woman (the church/bride) of man (OC man --> consistant with Romans 11 statement to "boast not against the branches");
9 for also man (OC man) was not created for the sake of the woman (the church/bride), but woman (the church/bride) for the sake of the man (OC man);
10 because of this, the woman (the church/bride) ought to have authority on the head, because of the angels.
11 However, man (OC man) is not apart from woman (the church/bride), nor woman (the church/bride) apart from man (OC man), in the Lord (in the Lord, they are a new creation).
12 For as the woman (the church/bride) is out of the man (OC man), so also the man (OC man) through the woman (the church/bride); but all things are from God.
13 You judge among yourselves: is it fitting for a woman (the church/bride) to pray to God unveiled?
14 Or does not nature herself teach you that if a man indeed wears long hair (naturally OC man, having the leaven of the Pharisees naturally), it is a dishonor to him?
15 But if a woman wears her hair long (Romans 2:14, does the righteous law by nature) , it is a glory to her; because the hair has been given to her instead of a veil.
16 But if anyone thinks to be contentious, we do not have such a custom, nor the assemblies of God.
Ephesians 5
22 Wives ( = those under covenant), subject yourselves to your own husbands ( = those they are in covenant to), as to the Lord,
23 because a husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is Head of the assembly, and He is the Savior of the body.
24 But even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also the wives to their own husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave Himself up on its behalf,
26 that He might sanctify it, cleansing it by the washing of the water in the Word,
27 that He might present it to Himself as the glorious assembly, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such things, but that it be holy and without blemish.
28 So, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies, (he loving his wife loves himself),
29 for then no one hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as also the Lord the assembly.
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.
31 "For this, a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh." Gen. 2:24
32 THE MYSTERY IS GREAT, BUT I SPEAK AS TO CHRIST AND AS TO THE ASSEMBLY (Where I validate those crazy ideas in parenthesis this chapter).
33 However, you also, everyone, let each one love his wife as himself, and the wife, that she give deference to the husband.
Verse 32 acknowledges the symbolism. Beginning with "however", there seems to be a quick reference to literal marriage and deference.
1 Timothy 2
11 Let a woman (church/bride) learn in silence, in all subjection.
12 And I do not allow a woman (church/bride) to teach nor to exercise authority over a man (NC man = Jesus), but to be in silence.
13 For Adam ( = Covenant head) was formed first, then Eve ( = Covenant body).
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived has come to be in transgression;
15 but she will be kept safe through the childbearing (In her death throes she is reborn), if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with sensibleness.
The church did not speak, Jesus spoke through the Spirit, through the church.
1 Cor 14
34 ¶ Let your women (church/bride) be silent in the assemblies, for it is not allowed to them to speak, but to be in subjection, as also the Law says.
35 But if they desire to learn anything, let them question their husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in an assembly.
It was important that the woman remain silent, and allow her head to speak.
Paul is referring to a public assembly. Church was predominantly held at home and such things were not issues there. Questions were to be reserved for a less crowded place, less likely to be given over to chaos and confusion for those who might be new believers.. and I wouldn't have build up the church either. They were able to "ask their husband at home" as the Spirit was there communicating to them or through them.
In conclusion
My intent is to offer an additional or different perspective, eliminating the apparent biblical contradiction. I would also like to add that this is not to say that people have never applied all of this literally, and it is not to diminish the significance of the women who did remain silent in the shadow of a coming reality. They were all living in a transitionary period, receiving instructions sort of "moment by moment". They were not new laws that would carry over into the next age, some of them were still straight from the law of old, delivered by Moses.
Adam was cast out to labor at tilling the field, the Bride worked to sow it and the day came when the field was reaped. The day came when new life would flourish there and that day, would not have an end.
From out of the horizon in the East, ancient Hebrews watched the sun rise. They watched it set again in the Western horizon. "Olam" means "in the far distance" or "beyond" and is translated "world" in reflection of the world over which the sun distantly passed (or passed beyond). It could also be translated "for ever" in that it represented that which was over the seeable horizon.
Now living over that horizon, in the new world, the light of the Lamb shines upon us.
From out of the shadow of the old world women are becoming unsilenced. They are, WomenBeyond.
