Funny Stuff
I was shocked when I found out who the biggest failure in the Bible actually is…The biggest one in the whole Bible is God…I mean, He lost His top-ranking, most anointed angel; the first man He ever created; the first woman He ever created; the whole earth and all the fullness therein; a third of the angels, at least - that's a big loss, man….

As demonstrated in part 1 of this series, it seems that "broad contradiction" would be an understatement.

Shifting Gears

1 Corinthians 15
22 for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

Many debate how one gets "in Adam". Whether by birth, or driven by a nature that would inevitably place them "in Adam", they agree that everyone, without exception, was or would be "in Adam". In other words, "in Adam" was a universal condition.

In the book of Hosea, we find a dark and melancholy period in Israel's history. It was just before the captivity and their sins had brought upon them great national disasters. The figures of marriage and adultery are common in the Old Testament writings to represent the spiritual relations between God and the people of Israel. In this book we also see the adultery of Israel and their punishment. (With their future repentance, forgiveness, and restoration). This is all similarly, Hosea points out (Hosea 6:7), to Adam's transgressing the covenant.

I would like now to glance back "in the beginning", and to Adam and Eve as Paul did (1 Timothy 2:11-15), hopefully gaining a different perspective concerning the "contradiction" and a possible explanation for mention of Adam transgressing the covenant.

Key:
'adam= man, any man, men, mankind
ha-'adam= the man
'et ha-'adam= this same man

Genesis 1
26 ¶ And God said, let Us make man ('adam) in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creepers creeping on the earth.
27 And God created the man (et ha'adam) in His own image; in the image of God He created him. He created them male and female.

"Adam" can be literally understood in this text as "mankind". "Them" is referring to "adam", and "they" are male (zakar) and female (N@qebah). This point is most clearly made in Genesis 5:2 which reads "This is the book of the generations of Adam: In the day that God created man. He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and blessed them, and called their name Adam in the day when they were created."

"Their" name was "Adam". I am not implying that Adam was a literal hermaphrodite (for those of you who don't know, they are people born with both male and female parts) and was split into two biological sexes later. I am saying that "adam" in Genesis 1 referred to all of mankind, men and women.

Genesis 1:28 reads that mankind was created to be fruitful, to multiply and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over it. Basically, humanity was created to till, refine, nurse, cherish, nourish, and nurture.

Gen 2
7 And Jehovah God formed the man (et ha'adam) out of dust from the ground, and blew into his nostrils the breath of life; and man ('adam) became a living soul.
8 ¶ And Jehovah God planted a garden in Eden to the east; and He put the man ('adam) whom He had formed there.

So far in the story, there is no reason to believe that adam is not a group. A change however, will happen.

Gen 2
16 ¶ And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Eating you may eat of every tree in the garden; 17 but of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil you may not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, dying you shall die.

We see that God has given his word, or covenant, that if mankind ate of the Tree of Knowledge, "dying they shall die".

Gen 2
18 ¶ And Jehovah God said, It is not good, the man being alone. I will make a helper suited to him. 19 And Jehovah God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the heavens out of the ground. And He brought them to the man, to see what he would call it. And all which the man might call it, each living soul, that was its name. 20 And the man called names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every animal of the field. But no helper suited to him was found for a man. 21 ¶ And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh underneath. 22 And Jehovah God formed the rib which He had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man.

Hebrew nouns are not defined as "person, place, or thing" as ours are, they are defined as the action of a person, place, or thing. The word translated "cloud", for example, would be understood as "that which covers". It covers the sky, it covered the glory of God so that none would look on His face and die, it covered the magicians trick, and it covered the earth in the form of Israel. That said, a "rib", is not a "rib". It is "that which substains" or "holds up".

The word "ishshah", which is translated "woman" in verse 22, makes its first biblical appearance here. The word for "woman" meaning "female" again is "N@qebah". The word "ishshah" is synonymous with "wife", and it was "ishshah" that was formed from the rib of the man.

One group was given a function, the other retained one. For example: Imagine Adam, as in "mankind", as a folding chair. As soon as the legs are folded out, the spot on which we sit takes on the role of being "that which is being held up", while the legs take on the role of "that which holds up". The spot on a chair that we sit on was always "that which is being held up", but the legs offer helpful support. Though adam's role never changed, he was given relief from doing it alone. With or without the rib, adam was "that which is being held up", yet upon Eve's formation, she took on the role "that which holds up".

Ancient Hebrews thought connectively, and concrete concerning concepts and ideas. Their train of thought was in touch with the senses; it can be seen, touched, or tasted. The man was physically the stronger sex. Hebrew tents were divided into two parts. The main section was the men's section. The other section was the womens section, with a wall dividing the two parts. The only person allowed into the womens section, was the father over that house. The men's section was located behind the entrance for the purpose of protection. The idea was "If you want to get to my family, you will have to go through me first".

"Being held up" was a dominant role because it existed first. Anything dominant was assigned maleness. The seeming lesser role was assigned to the weaker sex. It was not about ego, it was about observation and life back then. So before that, adam was mankind, and after, adam is man --"iysh". "Iysh" is translated "man" as well as "adam" and is synonymous with " husband ".

"Husband" and "wife" are a covenantal language and their union represents their covenantal assurance. God said in Hosea 2:16 that Israel would one day call Him "husband" ("Iysh"). But I am jumping ahead..

For now, I hope that you consider that "wife" biblically is not always speaking of an individual and such a group is not consisting only of females (ie Israel and the Bride of Christ).

Gen 2
23 And the man (adam) said, This now at last is bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh. For this shall be called Woman (wife/ishshah), because this has been taken out of man (husband/iysh).
24 Therefore, a man (husband/iysh) shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife (ishshah) and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man (adam) and his wife, and they were not ashamed.

This marked the beginning of an alliance, a marriage, even a covenant , between the man and his wife. They were now in covenant to one another, and through adam, given a covenant by God. This is further demonstrated in Genesis 3 verses 1-5.

Gen 3
1 ¶ And the serpent was cunning above every animal of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said to the woman, Is it true that God has said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3 but of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.
4 And the serpent said to the woman, Dying you shall not die,
5 for God knows that in the day you eat of it, even your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as God, knowing good and evil.
The woman/wife didn't exist when the covenant was given to mankind, yet here she clearly has knowledge of it. Death came through Adam in that the covenant was delivered by Adam. That covenant again, was "And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Eating you may eat of every tree in the garden; but of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil you may not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, dying you shall die." Again, this consumption was a univerally human condition. This was the beginning of death, though the ministration of it isn't established until Moses.

The serpent is described as cunning, returning again to Gen 3:1-5. Even in looking at the root for the Hebrew word translated "serpent", we gain some insight as to his character. The root word "nachash" means "one who practices divination". They were sorcerors, and hid their tricks behind clouds of smoke. It isn't known who the serpent in the garden is yet, because of his cunning. It isn't until his head is revealed, that it is crushed.

Adam and his wife had been described as "naked" and "unashamed". There are a few words in Hebrew that can be accurately translated as "naked" and this one is "arowm". A look at its word of origin also gives us some added insight in that it is "aram" which interestingly enough means "cunning".

Gen 3
6 ¶ And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise. And she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed leaves of the fig tree, and made girdles for themselves.
8 And they heard the sound of Jehovah God walking up and down in the garden at the breeze of the day. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the face of Jehovah God in the middle of the trees of the garden.

No change of character took place for Adam and his wife. Their becoming aware of their nakedness is synonymous with their "exposed cunning". The covenant with God had begun to expose a character flaw.. one that happened to be synonymous with that of the serpent, and one that inspired shame.

Gen 3
9 ¶ And Jehovah God called to the man and said to him, Where are you?
10 And he said, I have heard Your sound in the garden, and I was afraid, for I am naked, and I hid myself.
11 ¶ And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me, she has given to me of the tree, and I ate.
13 And Jehovah God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
14 ¶ And Jehovah God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all beasts, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.

The Serpent, Dragon, Satan, Devil, or Baal had changed his skin many times before his head was revealed. Consistantly he represents that which tried to swallow Israel whole. From Pharoah the Dragon, to Lucifer the King of Babylon, and more, many other heads had revealed themselves before the head who was the adversary of God was finally destroyed. This happened not long after his efforts at thwarting redemption by crucifying his Messiah and persecuting the followers of Jesus.

Connections

Gen 3
16 ¶ He said to the woman, I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception; you shall bear sons in sorrow, and your desire shall be toward your husband; and he shall rule over you.

The wife had failed at supporting (or holding up) her husband. In the least, awareness of his nakedness was no relief for him (she then failing as a help/support). Whereas before, the wife ensured that she filled her role independently, she had evidenced that she needed help herself. Her desire would now be toward her husband rather than personal gain (Gen 3:6), and he would rule over her. Jesus gave an example of righteous rulership in John 13 verses 3-17.

John 13
3 Jesus knowing that the Father has given all things into His hands, and that He came out from God, and goes away to God,
4 He rose up from the supper and laid aside His garments. And taking a towel, He girded Himself.
5 Then He put water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe off with the towel with which He was girded.
6 He then came to Simon Peter. And that one said to Him, Lord, do You wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not yet know. But you will know after these things.
8 Peter said to Him, You may in no way wash my feet to the age. Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.
9 Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.
10 Jesus said to him, The one having been bathed has no need other than to wash the feet, but is wholly clean. And you are clean, but not all.
11 For He knew the one betraying Him. For this reason He said, You are not all clean.
12 Then when He had washed their feet and had taken His garments, reclining again, He said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?
13 You call Me the Teacher, and, the Lord. And you say well, for I AM.
14 If then I washed your feet, the Lord and the Teacher, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.
15 For I gave you an example, that as I did to you, you also should do.
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, A slave is not greater than his lord, nor a messenger greater than the one sending him.
17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

To rule is to serve. Many a great leader understood that to build up a country, a business, or a family, one builds up those who comprise that country, business, or family.

God had said to the woman "I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception". Matthew 24 verses 4-8 reads:

"And answering, Jesus said to them, See that not any leads you astray. For many will come in My name, saying, I am the Christ. And they will cause many to be led astray. But you are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See, do not be terrified. For all things must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will be raised against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines and plagues and earthquakes against many places. But all these are a beginning of throes."

"Throes" is a translation of the Greek word "odin" which is the pain of childbirth (also known as "labor pains").

Isaiah 66 verses 5-14 prophesies the rebirth of Israel.

Isaiah 66
5 ¶ Hear the Word of Jehovah, those who tremble at His Word. Your brothers who hate you, who drive you out for My name's sake, have said, Jehovah is glorified. But He shall appear in your joy, and they shall be ashamed.
6 A roaring sound from the city! A sound from the temple! It is the sound of Jehovah repaying retribution to His enemies.
7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before pain came to her, she delivered a male child.
8 Who has heard a thing like this? Who has seen things like these? Shall the earth be brought forth in one day? Shall a nation be born in one step? For Zion travailed and also brought forth her sons.
9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? says Jehovah. Surely I cause birth, and hold back, says your God.
10 Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all who love her. Rejoice a rejoicing with her, all who mourn for her;
11 that you may suck and be satisfied with her comforting breasts; that you may milk out and delight yourselves with the fullness of her glory.
12 For so says Jehovah: Behold, I stretch out peace to her like a river, and glory of nations like an overflowing torrent. And you shall suck; you shall be carried on the side and be dandled on knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 And you will see, and your heart shall rejoice; and your bones shall flourish like the grass. And the hand of Jehovah shall be known toward His servants, and He shall be indignant with His enemies.

It is connected to that described in Revelation 12 verses 1-6.

Revelation 12
1 ¶ And a great sign was seen in the heavens, a woman having been clothed with the sun, and the moon was underneath her feet; and on her head a crown of twelve stars;
2 and having a babe in womb. She cries, being in labor, and having been distressed to bear.
3 And another sign was seen in the heavens. And, behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns! And on his heads were seven diadems,
4 and his tail drew the third part of the stars of the heaven, and he throws them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman being about to bear, so that when she bears he might devour her child.
5 And she bore a son, a male, who is going to shepherd all the nations with an iron staff. And her child was caught away to God, and to His throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place, it having been prepared from God, that there they might nourish her a thousand two hundred and sixty days.

The afore mentioned are descriptive of the pain of childbearing that entered the world through Eve.

Genesis 3 verses 17-20:

Gen 3
17 ¶ And He said to the man, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat from it, the ground shall be cursed because of you; you shall eat of it in sorrow all the days of your life.
18 And it shall bring forth thorns and thistles for you, and you shall eat the plant of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until your return to the ground. For you have been taken out of it; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
20 ¶ And the man called the name of his wife, Eve; because she became the mother of all living.

The name "Eve" does not mean "mother of all living", nor does Adam name her "mother of all living". Adam called his wife "Eve" which means "conceiver" or "she who conceives", because she became the mother of all living.

Galatians 4
21 ¶ Tell me, those desiring to be under Law, do you not hear the Law?
22 For it has been written, Abraham had two sons, one out of the slave woman and one out of the free woman.
23 But, indeed, he of the slave woman has been born according to flesh, and he out of the free woman through the promise,
24 which things are being allegorized, for these are two covenants, one, indeed, from Mount Sinai bringing forth to slavery (which is Hagar,
25 for Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, and she slaves with her children), 26 but the Jerusalem from above is free, who is the mother of us all;
27 for it has been written, "Be glad, barren one not bearing; break forth and shout, the one not travailing; for more are the children of the desolate rather than she having the husband." Isa. 54:1
28 But, brothers, we are children of promise according to Isaac.
29 But then, even as he born according to flesh persecuted the one according to Spirit, so it is also now.
30 But what says the Scripture? "Cast out the slave woman and her son, for in no way shall the son of the slave woman inherit with the son of the free woman." Gen. 21:10
31 Then, brothers, we are not children of a slave woman but of the free woman.

Revelation 17

1 ¶ And one of the seven angels having the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying to me, Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot sitting on the many waters,
2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the ones inhabiting the earth became drunk from the wine of her fornication.
3 And he carried me away into a desert, by the Spirit. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, filled with names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and being gilded with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominations and unclean things of her fornication.
5 And on her forehead was a name having been written: Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of the Harlots and of the Abominations of the Earth.
6 And I saw the woman being drunk from the blood of the saints, and from the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. And I marveled, seeing her, with a great marveling.

This whore in Revelation who was drunk from the blood of the saints was Jerusalem:

Matthew 23
37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her. How often I desired to gather your children in the way a bird gathers her chicks under her wings! And you did not desire it.
38 Behold, "your house is left to you desolate." Jer. 22:5

There were two mothers in Galatians 4, Old Jersualem = allegory for the Old Covenant, and New Jerusalem = allegory for the New Covenant. New Jerusalem is called the "mother of us all". In Revelation 17, Jerusalem is called the "mother of the harlots and abominations", so this is Old Jerusalem.

The title "Sun of Righteousness" is a personification and prophecy pointing to Jesus.

Malachi 4
2 But to you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall rise up, and healing will be on His wings. And you shall go out and frisk like calves of the stall.

Rev 21
23 And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, that they might shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it, even its lamp is the Lamb.

The title "Sun of Righteousness" even anchors his identity.

Psalms 84
11 For Jehovah God is a sun and shield; Jehovah will give grace and glory; He will withhold nothing good from those who walk in integrity.

The woman clothed with the Sun was born again having put on Christ one person at a time; a labor that pained her tremendously. Christians faced intense persecution such as unwarranted arrests, imprisonment, beatings, torture, and/or execution. Persecution came at the hands of the Jews of that day, and Rome. For the most part, the entire world was warring with them. The words of Matthew 24:21 rang true "For there will be great affliction, such as has not happened from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be."

From her affliction during the transition period - or the "Great Tribulation", she would bring forth a man child who would shepard the nations with an iron rod.

Psalms 2
7 ¶ I will declare concerning the statute of Jehovah: He said to Me, You are My Son. Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give the nations as Your inheritance; and the uttermost parts of the earth as Your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

Rev 2
26 And the one overcoming, and the one keeping My works until the end, "I will give to him authority over the nations,"
27 and "He will shepherd them with an iron staff" (they are "broken to pieces like clay vessels"), as I also have received from My Father. Psa. 2:8, 9

Rev 19
11 ¶ And I saw Heaven being opened. And, behold! A white horse, and He sitting on it having been called Faithful and True. And He judges and wars in righteousness.
12 And His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head many diadems, having a name that had been written, which no one knows except Himself;
13 and having been clothed in a garment which had been dipped in blood. And His name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies in Heaven followed Him on white horses, being dressed in fine linen, white and pure.
15 And out of His mouth goes forth a sharp sword, that with it He might smite the nations. And He will shepherd them with an iron rod. And He treads the winepress of the wine of the anger and of the wrath of God Almighty.

The man child is Jesus coming in the Kingdom.

To be continued...

Death came through Adam in that the covenant was delivered by Adam.

In light of your column, could the above passage mean "Death came through mankind...."? I haven't given it as much thought as you may have so I figured I'd ask. :)
