Funny Stuff
I got to tell you this quickly, just before we go. I had a word of prophecy from Ruth Heflin. You know who Ruth Heflin is? Ruth prophesied over me back in the '70s and everything she said has happened. She's just sent me a word through my wife and said, the Lord spoke to her audibly and said that He is going to appear physically in one of our crusades in the next few months. Yeah. She - I'm telling you! - she said, the Lord spoke to her audibly and said "Tell Benny I'm going to appear physically on the platform in his meeting.

Study Resources: The Order of Melchizedek and the Garden of Eden
Posted on Wednesday, January 28 @ 06:03:37 PST by Virgil

Other Anonymous submitted: "I found it very interesting that Melchizedek brings bread and wine “Communion or Lord’s Supper” according to the order of Melchizedek. I guess that would make the Communion service still in effect for the new covenant.

Notice in Gen.14:21 Melchizedek refuses Abram’s tithe and only asks for the persons. What ever that means? Perhaps Jesus is only interested in people coming to Him.

Seems to me the tenth of Abram’s possessions was just cheerful giving towards Melchizedek. The tithe was never required of Abram from Melchizedek.

In Heb.7:9-12 the tithe was a part of Levitical priesthood, and verse 12 says, For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.
Abram refuse to take his tithe back therefore the tithe was never a part of the order of Melchizedek.

As part of the Levitical priesthood the tithe was given to the support the priesthood, stranger, widow and orphans.

I believe we are free enough in the Lord to tithe if we want to, but I would also say that we are free to just give an offering with a cheerful heart without keeping track of our finances. Just like the observance of a day.

This is what we can see in the scriptures during the time that Jesus was establishing the new covenant. Jesus as Melchizedek did gave bread and wine, they did not require a tithe although a tithe was given to Melchizedek through Abam.

Jesus did however tell a Pharisee that he should tithe, but the Pharisee was at the time under the law of Moses.

Another way to look at this is we have been restored back to the Garden of Eden “new covenant” though Christ. Adam and Eve never tithed They may have enjoyed a Sabbath like we rest or abiding in Christ. The Sabbath started on the seventh day and continued on every other day until they sinned. When God entered into the Sabbath He rested until Adam and Eve sinned then He went back to work sacrificing a lamb.

Abram and Melchizedek
18. Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.
19.And he blessed him and said:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20.And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

And he gave him a tithe of all.
21.Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.”
22.But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
23.that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, “I have made Abram rich’—
24.except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”
Hebrews 7
9.Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak,
10.for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Need for a New Priesthood
11. Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron?
12.For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law."

These are good observations.

I advocate the Lord's Table as well. What is interesting in that passage is that Melchizedek is serving a victory feast. It was given to Abram AFTER his "enemies" were "delivered" into his hand. Christ promised to eat again with us "in the fullfillment of the kingdom" (Luke). This was an everlasting feast. In the transition period, the observance "showed forth the Lord's death." The Lord's "death" meant "death to the old covenant order". It was a meal eaten in anticipation of the CHANGE that was coming. Since that time has come, the Lord's Meal shows forth the Lord's LIFE and VICTORY over DEATH. It is a wonderful time of eating and drinking when seen from this perspective. There we are, eating and drinking with Christ Himself at the great table (Isaiah 25)...can we ask for more?

Thanks for this post Virgil.

It is interesting and timely. I have always been interested in Melchizedek. I was raised Mormon and while Melchizedek is pretty much a household name for Mormons., there is little known about him. I appreciate anything and everything I can find.

I also no longer attend conventional church meetings but do a home church (for lack of a better term) with a girlfriend who is not a preterist.

I won’t bore you with the details but the “communion” issue has come up. I had decided to go ahead and have a time of communion with her.

Our reasons and understanding of this vary slightly but I think that's okay. :)

This post was a confirmation for me.

Thanks and God Bless,
Julie

I was raised in a tradition which observes the Lord's Supper on a weekly basis, but even prior to accepting a preterist view I was wrestling with this subject.

If there is anything in the text which indicates Christ was lifting the bread and cup out of the Passover celebration to institute something new, I am at a loss to see it.

Remember that there was a regular meal in course of celebrating the Seder. Before continuing the prescribed ceremony of eating the afikomen and drinking the cup of redemption, supper was eaten hence "after supper."

We know the disciples were going to continue observing the feasts until the consummation so Christ is telling them how they are to understand these elements of the Passover.

Each year, as they celebrated the feast the bread and cup reminded them of Christ's sacrifice and that they were betrothed. He would be coming for them shortly.

He encouraged them saying He would not eat and drink these elements again until He did so "NEW" in the kingdom. That is a critical distinction.

"Kainos" means new in nature, form, and quality. It is something not seen before. Therefore, it seems to me our observance of "the feast" is prefigured by the old, but completely different from it.

My comfort zone still includes taking communion but my present thinking is the real observance is spiritual and continuous, rather than the physical elements we use. I see nothing wrong with a physical observance, but for me they are a reminder of what we are already observing beyond the realm of this flesh.

Dear friends

Reading the Genesis text, I can't see how "... in Gen.14:21 Melchizedek refuses Abram’s tithe and only asks for the persons."

Isn't the king of Sodom trying to pay or reward Abram for his efforts, or am I missing something?

Jeff
