countrymouse5s submitted: "I was reading a sermon by Moravian minister, Dr. Worth Green, and came across this: "I told him that I knew what he meant. I told him of a walk that I took through God's Acre in Salem not long ago. I stumbled over the grave of one of our old bishops. He was still preaching. The text on his flat stone was Romans 10 verse 9:"
"If you confess with your lips, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
I'm not in the habit of prooftexting; in fact, it's one of the things I normally abhor when it comes to Christian apologetics and polemics. However, when I read this part of Dr. Green's sermon this afternoon, this verse struck me gently but surely as a message of hope for all who believe.
It is as if to say that God has promised to lead every soul who comes this far surely and faithfully to sanctuary, no matter what perils litter the path. We all get distracted and wander off the path, but our Shepherd is faithful to find us and bring us back to Himself. He has promised, and He always keeps His word.
We may not agree on every point, but surely we can agree about this simple, basic proclamation. God will save those who confess Jesus as Lord and wholeheartedly believe that God raised Him from the dead.
The peace of Christ to all who thus believe.

by Ed on Tuesday, December 23 @ 11:53:56 PST (User Info | Send a Message) | My wife's aunt attends a Church of Christ. There only confession of faith is "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God". They immerse all those who come, and then they take open weekly communion. Simple. They have a large congregation for the area where they are located, and they allow theological dissent, EVEN WITH THE PASTOR.
We are currently trying to move to that same area, and it is our plan to regularly attend that congregation for the reasons listed in the first paragraph. |
