Politics can be treacherous. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi walked on even riskier ground in a recent TV interview when she attempted a theological defense of her support for abortion rights. Roman Catholic bishops consider her arguments on St. Augustine and free will so far out of line with church teaching that they have issued a steady stream of statements to correct her.

Unless one has been recently disgusted by a surfeit of discussion on this sometimes barren topic, a religious thinker will almost invariably be carried away into a heated argument. This is better than to denominate the question barren, for such an attitude is agnostic, and to be disgusted is merely to be exhausted. Every Christian must face this problem squarely, and especially must the Calvinist so do, since he believes that much of the learned disrespect of Christianity is owing to the loose thinking of Catholics and Arminians.

News: Young Earth Creationist: Dinosaurs helped build the pyramids

Far from becoming extinct 65 million years ago, the dinosaurs actually co-existed with early humans, and even helped in the construction of the pyramids.
This is the word of Vince Fenech, Evangelist pastor and director of a fully licensed, State-approved Creationist institution which admits children aged between four and 18. “Of course the ‘dinoceros’ existed (as Fenech pronounces the word). It is mentioned in the Book of Job. They were used to help build the pyramids,” he says, adding that this latter observation is only “his personal belief”, and that it does not form part of the school’s curriculum.

Preterism: Flesh and Blood

When Paul writes about “flesh and blood” not being able to inherit the kingdom of God, what does he mean? The purpose of this essay is to explore this question and hopefully present some answers. A natural part of this question would also involve answering the question, “what is the kingdom of God?” I will not set out to answer that question here, presuming that the reader will have some background already on the “kingdom of God”; I only wish to discuss the concept of “flesh and blood”. Let’s start with 1 Corinthians 15. Unless otherwise noted, all quotations of Scripture will be from Young’s Literal Translation.

News: Left Behind Authors: Obama Not Antichrist

This may be a first for a presidential campaign: A debate about whether one of the candidates is the Antichrist. The latest round began with the McCain campaign Web ad released earlier this month called "The One." The spot includes clips of Obama seeming to imply he is God's choice, shots of Charlton Heston, stairs in the clouds (to heaven?) and images that some say are meant to mimic those in the wildly popular "Left Behind" book series about the end of the world that feature the Antichrist.

Preterism: Hal Lindsey, Obama, and the Antichrist

It’s a mystery to me why anyone would listen to Hal Lindsey on Bible prophecy. His 1970 Late Great Planet Earth is a lasting testimony to getting almost everything wrong. In 1977, Lindsey stated that if his 1948-1988 prophetic scenario did not come to pass, he would be a “bum.” Sorry to say, that Lindsey has stayed in prophecy business and is still making predictions He said the following in an articole posted on World Net Daily: “Obama is correct in saying that the world is ready for someone like him—a messiah-like figure charismatic and glib….The Bible calls that leader the Antichrist. And it seems apparent that the world is now ready to make his acquaintance.”

Preterism: 'Understanding End Times Prophecy' by Paul Benware: A Review

Paul N. Benware’s revised and expanded edition of Understanding End Times Prophecy includes a chapter on Preterism. This is a good sign. Preterists teach that certain prophetic passages have already been fulfilled (e.g., Matt. 24), while futurists claim that these same passages are yet to be fulfilled. The debate centers (mostly) on how specific time indicators like “near,” “shortly,” “quickly,” and “this generation” should be interpreted. Benware also claims that preterists regularly mix “the literal and allegorical” which results in “very inconsistent interpretations to a passage.” The following quotation encapsulates Benware’s argument on how he believes preterists interpret certain prophetic texts:

Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, my children were leaving the little Presbyterian church in College Place, Washington, where they had been attending a program. They looked up at the sky, and a verse they had read in the Bible leapt to their minds. Jesus said that in the last days, the sun would be darkened, and the moon would not give its light. The sky was so preternaturally dark that my girls thought that the end of the world was upon us. They joined hands and ran the several blocks to our home.

What I intend by using that pair of evocative terms as an initial way in to Paul will then become clear if we consider three central passages in which the same themes play the same kind of roles. This will open the way to a more detailed consideration of what, I shall argue, must be regarded as part of the fundamental structure of his thought, and how it relates to the other themes which will occupy us in subsequent chapters.

The focal point is of course on Jesus and Mary at the left of the picture; but I want you to imagine thought bubbles coming from the heads of some of the other characters, particularly the two in the middle, the ones wearing crowns and anxious expressions, the bride and the groom. What are they thinking, and how does Jesus deal with that?
