Folks it has been our yearly tradition for 8 years now to host the TruthVoice conference here in the Dayton area, which has proven to be a blessing and comfort to many people attending year after year. Unfortunately, it looks like 2010 will be a year to skip doing a conference for several reasons, some which are personal in nature, others financial...

As I already mentioned here before, I chose to participate in the Ohio Republican primaries for Greene County Commissioner here in Greene County. This means that between now and May 4 I will have to spend a substantial amount of time and even money in my effort to make it past the primaries and hopefully face a Democrat candidate on November 2, 2010.

To make things worse and to present the financial situation frankly, the donations at TruthVoice 2009 were only about $380 (as opposed to the $5,000+ donations in 2008), causing us to exhaust the entire amount of $2,800 leftover from 2008 on the 2009 conference expenses, making it impossible to put on a conference this year since I am planning on diverting personal funds in other directions. This is also very likely due to the economic situation we are all in; everyone finds it more difficult to come up with money for discretionary spending, such as traveling to and donating money to a conference.

The travel and hotel expenses for speakers are the largest chunk of conference costs, so depending on what speakers attend and where they come from, the expenses usually run anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500 which is actually very cheap for a two day conference -- more commendable, none of the speakers have ever asked for a speaking fee...they only asked their expenses be paid for. I often personally cover whatever amount is leftover and not covered by donations, however I will not be able to do so this year.

I am certain that once the elections are over, I will be able to dedicate more time to the 2011 conference and perhaps be able to put aside some money for it, but unless something major happens and some miracle donations show up from the shadows, it is highly unlikely that there will be a 2010 TruthVoice conference.

I definitely need to get with Virgil and find out how he puts on a conference for 3k! Our last one was twice that much, and the one before was...I don't even want to think about it. Granted, we had people coming from far and wide, and we fed them (I mean literally) but still...

Anyway, I need to get some points on being more frugal from Virg before we have our next one. :)

It's simple...it's a free conference so as an attendee you are on your own. That means no free coffee, drinks or anything that increases the costs of the venue. Once you add these things up, the cost will balloon out of control and before you know it the venue alone will run into the thousands. I think we did free coffee last year for just the first day in the morning, and that alone was a few hundred dollars.

Virgil,

When I speak at professional conferences, they don't pay my expenses. They only pay the expenses of the keynote speaker(s).

Well, mostly because not many of these guys make that much money to begin with, and honestly they probably would not come to speak at all if we did not cover their expenses. I guess it may sound silly, but I haven't even considered asking people to come and speak without paying for their trouble to come...hmm.

Not everyone asked to be reimbursed for expenses ;)

JL's picture

Sam has bragged about all the money he makes. Tim takes 3 months vacation every winter. Micky is a physician. Jeff Carter could bring a Christmas bucket. Ted, Ed, and Tami would speak for free.

I think it is time for a paradigm change.

Jeff, I hope you are not serious. If so, then what the hell are you talking about? I am so sick of your lies and slander. SICK OF IT. I have repeatedly asked Virgil NOT to cover expenses, but out of his kindness he won't take no for an answer. I don't charge anything and where in the hell, idiot, do I brag about money? Is this another one of your "I don't have the quotes, but I know you said it" bulls**t answers? Get lost, get out of my life, or repent.....

Sam's picture

I don't see any "edit" feature

JL's picture

Sorry Sam,

How are your franchising efforts going? :)

Thank-you for making my point. You are willing to speak without being reimbursed for expenses. Just so we are clear. You went far beyond my point. You would prefer not to be reimbursed for expenses. Good show. Virgil, please take note.

Virgil says it costs $800 plus reimbursements to put on TruthVoice. Jamie says plus time and stress. Okay. Cut Virgil's costs. That will cut Jamie's stress.

Are we getting close to having TruthVoice 2010? Virgil says, "Maybe." Jamie still says, "No."

How 'bout using the handy new "edit" feature on this comment?

Virgil's picture

I second Jeremy's suggestion - what if both Jeff and Sam go back and click on "edit" below their comments and work things out that way, since public apologies are highly unlikely? :)

Virgil's picture

See, you guys really upset each other with these comments and it's unnecessary. Remember that a computer screen does not transpose humor, sarcasm or whatever else very well. It upsets me to see anyone upset here on pp.

Sam,
I do recall you indicating how busy and successful you are with your work, but never that you were rolling in the dough.

I took it rather "tongue" in cheek, you know Mickey is a physician, that means "he is rich" and "Jeff Carter could bring a Christmas bucket” like a man of his integrity would even be tempted to something like that. I think it was light hearted humor over a sad thought of no Truthvoice.

Mickey,

I was suggesting Jeff Carter bring an empty bucket for the audience to fill. Not a full bucket for him to empty.

Sorry for not making myself clear.

Maybe so....and I gave that a benefit of doubt in "you are not serious, are you, but, if you are...." Probably reactionary on my part....at this point, Mick, I don't really care that much anymore with them.....

Virgil's picture

I never heard Sam brag about money... But the point is well made. We can talk it over here and see what everyone thinks about it. The cost of the venue is no more than $700 or $800 so that is a minor issue.

There you Jeff go… you just got yourself a job :)

Not to mention all of the stress and time it is for Virgil and with campaigning, it would be too much for our family.

ssjdoob's picture

I can see why it would be too much with Virgil campaigning and all. I would be willing to host it here in Akron, Ohio which is only about 3 hours away if everyone can work out the money thing. I NEED my TruthVoice!

Ha, Jamie! Spoken like a true wife and mommy. That's exactly the sort of thing my wife would say were we in yours and Virgil's position. :)
