Hyper-Preterism or Redirectionalism?

Redirectionalism

On http://www.eschatology.org Don Preston calls his eschatological position a Full – Preterist position. However, I am sure both Full Preterist Ed Stevens and Don Preston see a big difference between their Preterist view. Stevens believes in ongoing sanctification unto physical death, whereas Preston believes in a Heaven Now Preterism. They are not both preterists to the same degree. Both Gary DeMar and Don Preston could be argued to hold to a covenant eschatological position, so that term means little here. Hyper means over; above; beyond, this is a term both King and Preston are familiar with. So to be understood we need to say something like Hyper, Full, and Partial Preterist, unless there is some other 1,2,3, progression that we should use instead.

Don K. Preston says in his “Morning Musings” that today Christians on earth have been elevated into God’s presence so that they are now equal to anyone standing in heaven, even in the Most Holy Place. That the Law’s of Moses and the Judgment are fully past. Life After Death #9: Hades, Torah, and the Most Holy Place Created on Wednesday, 20 March 2013 09:26 “As long as man was not restored to Eden, as long as the resurrection to take man back into the presence of God, as long as the resurrection did not does not occur, torah, the old law the law of Moses, remains binding. ... if you say that man has not been restored to the full presence of God in the Most Holy Place the Law of Moses remains valid and binding today”

Contrary to what Don Preston says, the ethical Laws of Moses still remains binding today, we are still in the already but not yet, which are summed up in that you shall love God will all your heart soul and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. If you don’t want to do that, if you think you are free to do something else, then you need to understand that you are under the judgments of God. Man still has sin, and is still going through a process of sanctification to become like Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the Law of Moses. The position that Don K. Preston has implied is that in heaven, in the Most Holy Place, there are sinners. That God has no way to deal with sinning Christians, as with the case with King David, or as with the case of the churches Paul or else those churches that John addressed in Revelation. And that whatever you see here on earth, with the church and its imperfections such as those that are defined in the New Testament, this is very same kind of Christians we will see in heaven.

Well, not to worry, it is easy to prove that Preston is dead wrong. For example, Paul says that for the Christian here on earth, it is better for him to marry than to burn, and in marriage they have not sinned. But in heaven there is no option for this, there is no marriage in heaven. Matthew 22:23ff “The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.” Thus far we have understood that when your husband dies you can get married again because there is no marriage between those heaven and those on earth. If we want to define marriage the way Don K. Preston does, that means that in the New Testament physical death could not break the marriage covenant, there is no difference between the here and the hereafter anymore. Don K. Preston should immediately already have written a book about this subject so as to stop the confusion believers are facing today as to what to do, since what Jesus was saying in Matt. 22:17ff has nothing to do with this problem we thought He was answering. But to make matters even more confusing for the flock of Don K. Preston, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 7:31ff “… for the fashion of this world passeth away. But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.” . That means that in the new age we find ourselves in today, no one should be getting married anymore, that has passed away, but today we see this is not the case. But I can assure you that Christians are still in that old world that is passing away. I assume that Don K. Preston will imply that this annulling of marriage in the age to come has to do with annulling the Old Covenant means for establishing God’s elect. However Paul argues now in Roman chapters 8 and 9 that believers need to understand (and this is before AD 70) that election does not come through endless genealogies. Jesus said in Matthew 3:9 “And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” Jesus is not contradicting Paul in Matthew 22:33ff implying that election comes through genealogies only after AD 70, genealogies meant nothing long before AD 70, it is not that they would have no meaning only until after AD 70. This would be contradicting Paul.

Obviously there is a big difference between the world we are now in and the world to come according to Jesus in Matt. 22:23 and Paul in 1 Corinthians 7:31ff. There will be no more need for marriage in the world to come, man will no longer operate under the flesh because there he cannot sin, 1 John 3:9. 1 John 2:16ff " For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." Angles were the administers of the OT, they were the administers of it because they do not sin, they are seen as guarding the ark of God, but God did not provide atonement for the angles, Hebrews 2:16. So now we know what holiness is, it has a definition. Likewise in the second coming when Jesus comes again in our futurist Redirectionalism ideologically, it says in Hebrews 9:28 “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” When we see Christ again literally it will be without sin. This is the reason why Christ came the first time and the very same and only reason why He comes the second time. In Don K. Preston’s view Jesus came only to make man aware of sin, provide an atonement, but not to rid the world of sin. That ultimately God The Father started something He can’t finish, and made a big ugly mess out of heaven in the process. Now we have this equation where God sees sin in terms of numbers rather than in total disgust. But in the church of Laodicea God says that even being lukewarm makes him so sick of people like this He will cast them out like vomit, did God change His mind? NO! You have been warned. Sin makes Jesus sick to His stomach. God will pour His wrath out on those Christians who suppose they can willfully sin in His living presence and take communion in an unworthy manner.

Don K. Preston is arguing for the very world that Christ came to destroy and that the Devil came to save! We are still in that already but not yet world that is passing away today. Christ came to do away with sin. Don K. Preston is implying that Christ came to make sin legal by doing away with the Law for no good reason. The truth is that we are still under the Law, in that if we break the Law we can expect to be judged by the law, just as David was judged by the Law for adultery and murder. Yet there can be grace, forgiveness. God is angry with sinners every day, be they Christian like those in Laodicea or the Heathen, and unless a man can repent because he believes in Jesus Christ he will see the weight of God’s wrath upon him. God will not share His place with sinners, God can do something about it, and sinners can do nothing to make themselves like the angles, they have to keep sinning. Romans 7 still applies today “13Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

We are still awaiting the resurrection in Jesus Christ to be raised up with Him at His second coming, when we see Him again there will be no more sin, we have the victory in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Exodus 19:18ff and 32:7ff says in the OT dispensation: “[18]And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.[19] And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.[20] And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.[21] And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.[22] And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.[23] And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.[24] And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.[25] So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them. . . . [7] And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: [8] They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. [9] And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: [10] Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. ”

The Lord has not changed. God would not propose a system that would allow naked raging rebels on Mount Sinai or into Heaven the Most Holy Place. This is why we have the resurrection that the scriptures speak of. The seed that is planted within us CANNOT SIN, it is the end to the fleshly nature that the resurrection has to do with. What Don K. Preston in effect proposes is a reversed sanctification. in turn will imply universalism and acceptance of all peoples, more excepting then those who hold to the view of inalilationism. But Jesus came to take away sin, and those who continue in sin will go to Hell.

But Preterists do not need to be Preterists. Preterists can take all these things idealistically as having to do with types of sanctification in the church. That the First-fruits were a type, an example of what God thinks about sin and His elect displayed in the lives of those first Christians as they overcame death, apostasy, and all the other things mentioned in Revelation 1-3. Preston has no good reason for jumping out of the thinking of the Apostles and now onto uncharted waters. When AD 70 came, or better said AD 66, the church is now an example for Don Preston to follow, we now know what is the way we are to follow in Christ and in His First-Fruits. Don K. Preston will have none of it. For Preston Jesus is an OT Jesus, He is no longer the Way. But the when we get to the New Heavens and Earth we see that ultimately it is just another recapitulation of the millennium and chapter 19 having to do with ‘the already but not yet’ in combination with the age to come when we are resurrected where Jesus Christ is Lord of all. The New world is fully reveled in Jesus and His people, yet there is still the same struggles as before, there is a tree for the healing of the nations.

Another thing that has been confused is the idea that Jesus has come a second time as defined in Hebrews 9:8ff “The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: [9] Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; [10] Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. [11] But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come,” Note that Paul speaking of Christ our High Priest tells us that His office has to do with ”good things to come”. Paul is not talking about historical chronological progression. Paul is talking about, that in this life we go through it with Christ as our High Priest we are to be made like Christ and that in the end we will be like Christ. Hebrews 9:23 ” And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: [28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” If you want to take these things historically as Don K. Preston does they mean nothing, and in effect you reverse their meaning, as well as reversing the meaning of everything else in the Bible.
