Dear Mr. Impe,

I am faxing this to you in the hopes that it will for sure reach you. I have e-mailed my challenge below to you three times now, and I have received no response at all. Believing you to be a man of honor, and that you would not simply ignore my challenge without even the courtesy of a response of any kind, I wanted to take as direct approach as possible. I have listened carefully to your brief discussions of preterism, and have been, frankly, appalled at the lack of understanding on your part, and your misuse of scriptures to attempt to refute the Truth of God’s word.

It is my sincere prayer that you will seriously consider my challenge to openly discuss the issue of eschatology. This challenge will also be posted on preterist websites viewed by millions of people. The viewers of this challenge will be anxious to know of your response, or lack thereof.

Most sincerely,

Don K. Preston

Dear Mr. Impe,

Greetings to you! I recently listened to your program in which you discussed the differing views of eschatology, including the preterist view. I am an advocate of full preterism, incidentally I prefer the term Covenant Eschatology.

I was taken aback when you referred to preterism as "full of bologna, and worse than Oscar Meyers" and condemned this view as so egregiously wrong.
My name is Don K. Preston, and I am the author of several books espousing Covenant Eschatology. In addition, I have had several public debates in defense of preterism, and against dispensationalism. I have had three radio debates with Thomas Ice, and am due, along with John Anderson, to debate Mr. Ice and Mark Hitchcock, in Florida, in 2003. This is to be a two day event.

Since you have taken it upon yourself to publicly condemn preterism as a false doctrine, and urged those espousing the view to abandon it, I want to extend an invitation to you to publicly prove and defend your charges that preterism is a false doctrine.

You have stated on your program before that you have engaged in public debates. Thus, I hereby invite and challenge you to meet me in a public debate, of perhaps four nights to allow a proper investigation of this topic, in a mutually agreeable venue.

I can assure you that the preterist community would be eager to attend such a debate, and my good friend John Anderson of the Voice of Reason, a national Christian radio talk show, would promote this event with vigor.
It is only proper and right that you give the preterist camp the opportunity to defend itself against your charge of false doctrine. I am fully qualified and representative of the preterist view, and it is my sincere hope and desire that you will do the honorable thing, and agree to meet me on the polemic platform to discuss this most fascinating and important topic.
For His Truth, and In His Grace,

Don K. Preston

Don, I have heard you mention occasionally that you have contacted the JVI HQ in MI and the personal response to the debate challenge is consistently MIA... I see from the above you weren't exaggerating!

You posted this in August 2002, and here it is almost 2 years later! So did you get an official word yet? Or can we presume the ...uh... FAX machine ate Jack's homework?

Sad, really... I can almost overlook a weekly televangelist's painfully-weak gospel message, and even his loving attitude towards those who institutionally reject faith-alone in Jesus-alone... Almost.

But the major theme of your teachings and videos? No response; to someone who has written nearly a dozen materials refuting your teachings? What will the VanImpites out there think when they hear, Jack? Think of the impressionable ones...

I am especially sad since I am planning on mailing to Van Impe (and about 2 dozen other well-known teachers) a letter asking their response on a particular something which mentions them by name - I was hoping I could see all-at-once what the Big Names In Futurism might have to say. But now I wonder if perhaps sending a copy to JVI would be a waste of postage?

trouble's picture

Hello . I am so fed up with all of the negativity towards preterism also. When trying to discuss the issues using scripture all I have encountered push the discussion into the realms of speculation, misguided logical premises , & the multiple faucets of " words don't have meanings / definitions ,they have usages ".., Efforts to avoid the clear written words of God .All the people in my church look upon me as a fallen heritic since I finally shared my identity as a believer in covenantal eschatology. They will not discuss any concerns that they might need to do more studing in the subject of prophecy. they are so sure they are right . I too watch the imp and he seems like those in my present church.., don't hold you're breath...... If by some reason of insanity he does agree pleeeeease e-mail me the dates & locale .I have a great burning to see truth in interpretation& in the forefront of church cirruculumn.we need to help our common pew sitting bretheren gain freedom from a leadership that is not willing to back up their suppositions of scripture, with scripture& without alot of beating around the bush( excuse me .., for a second I forgot .., they can't ) and their accusations. The way, most see Preterist makes me angry.., I probably should'nt get that way but I do sometimes .When people who don't put but minimal time into studing the word, can't tell me why they believe this or that, and say that my time is wasted studing prophecy, look at me like I'm a Satanical inspired heretic ( and they have actually said that ) well.. It hurts..,I get discouraged and sometimes angry. But alas God is victorious in that this type of uninformed dogmatism only makes the fire burn brighter.
