A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music. The website for the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., says there are "scriptural bases" for the book burning. The site quotes Acts 19:18-20: "And many that believed, came and confessed and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as "Satan's Bibles," according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

"I believe the King James version is God's preserved, inspired, inerrant and infallible word of God," Pastor Marc Grizzard told a local news station of his 14-member parish.

Grizzard's parish website explains that the Bible is the "final authority concerning all matters of faith and practice," for Amazing Grace Baptist Church. In the Parish doctrinal statement, Grizzard expounds that "the Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical-historical meaning, and all issues of interpretation and meaning shall be determined by the preacher."

The event also seeks to destroy "Satan's music" which includes every genre from country, rap and rock to "soft and easy" and "Southern Gospel" and" contemporary Christian."

David Lynch, a resident of nearby Asheville, N.C., told Raw Story "it's a little disconcerting how close this is to my home."

"They are burning so much stuff I've dubbed them the hypocritical Christian Taliban," Lynch said in a phone interview with Raw Story. "Just the scope of all the information they want to destroy is pretty disturbing."

I think that there may be a reason why it's only a 14 member parish.

It's unfortunate that such a miniscule sample will inevitably be used to define the larger (much much larger) majority.

Think of the persecuted churches....they could use those Bibles....truly, truly sad.

As sad as this is, I hope they are adding Hal Lindsey's stuff and other Dispy garbage ..

I somehow doubt it though

A large portion is just plain lame, but there are a few zingers among the common back and forth comments at the article site. My pick:
"They should all be rounded up and arrested for contributing to global warming, or *something.*":)

Wonder if this dude prefers the KJV because it is only one of modern use that actually translates 1 K 14:10 rather than interprets an ANE euphemism. I wonder if Pastor Marc would embrace the truth. May be they should add KJV copies to the burning because of offensive language.

They could also hold clinics for voluntary FGM in the spirit of Galatians 5:12 as protest against all that can be learned from Oprah and Dr. Oz.

I hope they don't burn season 5 of Stargate Atlantis on DVD.
They might then be too far gone to bring back from insanity.

Had to joke, it's almost too sad to be serious about.

we are all in this together

I hope they start with their own house and burn all of the magazines that they get along with the TV from the shows they watch and the radios, newspapers that they get each day. Oh yes, we must not forget about the school books.

"Education is the most powerful ally of Humanism and every American school is a school of Humanism. What can the theistic Sunday schools meeting for an hour once a week, and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of a five-day program of humanistic teaching" Charles Francis Potter 1930 from Humanism: A New Religion

"I am convinced that the battle for humankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceived their role as the proselytizers of a new faith’ a religion of humanity that recognizes and respect the spark of what theologians call divinity in every human being. These teachers mush embody the same selfless dedication as the most rabid fundamentalist preachers. For they will ministers of another sort, utilizing a classroom instead of a pulpit to convey humanistic values in whatever subject they teach, “regardless of the educational level-preschool, daycare or large state university. The classroom must and will become an areas of conflict between the old and the new”, --the rotting corpse of Christianity. Together with all adjacent evils and misery and the new faith of humanism, resplendent in its promise of a world in which the never-realized Christian ideal of “love thy neighbor” will finally be achieved…humanism will emerge triumphant. I must if the family of humankind is to survive. John Dunphy 1983 The Humanist: Jan/Feb
